11/12/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes (as told by Troy): Hiiiiiiiiiii!! I’m Troy, and I’m a puppy ready to have some fun! I’m told I’m very handsome and I must agree :). My teeth are nice and white, my coat clean and groomed and my weight perfect for my size…. I love to play and go for walks and I always wag my tail at everyone. My new friend, named Volunteer, took me to the park and we played, and hugged and she asked me to pose for some pictures so I did. She said good pictures will help me get a new home and I’m certainly all about that! After the park we went into a pen so I could be off leash and we could play a little bit. I get excited so do a little jumping, but I’m quick to respond to correction as I want everyone to like me. Volunteer sat down on the bench to take notes (she told me she was doing that as I have no idea what that means), and she invited me to join her on the bench. I was soooo happy to have that invitation and hopped right up and into her lap! She laughingly told me I’m a bit big for her lap, but we cuddled anyway. Felt so good, I love to lean in for some snuggling. I’m hoping that my rock star good looks, but smile, wagging tail and fun personality will make you want to come meet me. I’d love a new home and am ready to learn whatever you want to teach me. I like treats so will learn fast with positive reinforcement training (that means lots of treats for doing a good job). So, come meet me today and let’s go home together. I know you want to.
1/13/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: N/A Unaltered, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 11/13/2016 Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions, mouths assessor’s hand without applying pressure. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, settles at end Squeeze 1: 3. Dog is soft in body and eye, and moves his legs/body so that the Assessor is unable to hold the paw, mouths assessor’s hand applying light pressure Flank squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all. Toy: 1. Minimal interest in Toy, dog sniffs, then turns away. Summary: Troy was, at times, difficult to redirect from mouthing. High energy, will require daily mental and physical stimulation in the forms of walks, runs, exercise, play. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Selective: These dogs can succeed with certain other dogs, but may be more selective or picky. They may dislike certain ‘types’ of dogs or styles of dog play so they may require extra supervision when interacting with other dogs. PLAYGROUP: 11/12: When off leash with female dogs Troy is initially boisterous and playful. However, after the dogs stop playing he begins to mount persistently despite correction. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 11/11/16 During his initial medical exam Troy allowed handling but was nervous when his neck was touched, he would snap when they attempted to remove his collar.. ENERGY LEVEL: RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (Suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience) _X_No young children (under 5) Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control (It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training is recommended.) _X_Mouthiness/Poor bite inhibition (Decreasing the force of the mouth as well as the frequency of mouthing, in this order is recommended by using force-free, reward based training as well to reinforce a soft appropriate mouth and redirect hard inappropriate mouthing onto toys.)
11/12/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Troy will engage in running play with male and female dogs but during other play sessions he may only mount, despite correction (this may be driven by anxiety or stress, rather than sexual motivation). He arrived to the care center as a stray, so any in-home behaviors with other dogs are unknown. Based on observations, the behavior department feels that Troy could live with another playful dog, but he should be allowed time to acclimate to his surroundings before being introduced to any resident dogs. 11/12: When off leash with female dogs Troy is initially boistrous and playful. However, after the dogs stop playing he begins to mount persistently despite correction. The behavior department recommends slow introductions between Troy and any other playful dogs in a home. 11/19: Troy only mounts during play, both males and females. He does not cease with correction and is eventually removed from the yard. 11/22: Troy incessantly mounts both male and female dogs despite correction. 11/23: Troy engages in running play with a group of female dogs. He attempts to mount once but takes correction and continues playing.
