05/05/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Remember Fantasy Island and Tattoo calling, “The plane, the plane”? That’s our Tristan, calling, “the ball, the ball”!!! He’s an adorable pocket pittie, stepping gingerly down from his kennel as his legs are short and he has one very cloudy eye so may not see well from that one eye. But, he certainly sees a ball in my hand, ready to give chase and bring it back, tail wagging, eyes gleaming, settling for a chomp, and then another toss. Tristan was nervous on the street, needing some coaxing to get going, and periodically stopping to make sure this is what he wanted to do. Like The Little Engine That Could, he gathered his courage and we made it to the park, and that’s when I discovered his love of playing ball. He watched some kids playing basketball, his tail wagging, his body engaged and a rousing game of fetch became next on our agenda. He’s AMAZING! He’s such a quiet little dude who runs after the ball with such glee, never misses his pickup and brings it right back. Tristan’s other love is treats which he takes gently and with a soft tail wag of thanks. I’m head over heels in love with this initially shy and hesitant little guy, who then morphed into a ball-playing dynamo. Tristan is looking for his new position as an outfielder for your home team! He certainly should be the first draft choice, and we’ll send him to your team with a tennis ball! Come meet him and love him as much as I do.
05/04/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 5/1/17 Unaltered Male, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 5/3/17 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, closed mouth. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 2. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. His body is between you and the toy. No growling or stiffness. Summary: Tristan appeared fearful when he first entered the assessment room, backing away from the assessor and keeping distance. After a few minutes, he warmed up and became social and playful. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: Tristan is polite when interacting with dogs in the care center and plays gently when solicited. The behavior department feels Tristan may be most compatible with other tolerant or gently playful dogs. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 5/3/17 During his initial medical exam, Tristan was tense but allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Tristan so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No young children (under 5): Due to the behavior seen in the care center, we feel that Bentley may be intimidated by young children. He needs a slow approach and time to warm up. Potential challenges: _X_Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition _X_Fearful: Though observed to be human-social, Tristan may need time to warm up to the handler as he initially presents as a fearful dog, avoiding contact, shying away from direct touch. We recommend allowing Tristan to interact at his own pace. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing him to new/unfamiliar situations.
05/04/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE

He allows the female greeter dog to approach and sniff. Tristan begins to open up and bounces along playfully when introduced to other playful dogs. He is polite when greeting dogs who are nervous or uncomfortable.
