08/03/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Oh Suger, Suger! To lay eyes on her is to love her! She needs some dermatologic TLC in a bad way, but I think we are more concerned with her skin than Miss Suger is: all that matters to her is going out and about with a person at her side and food in her belly. She was shy and nervous when I first met her, but has really warmed up and is a doll in every way. She has perfect leash manners, seems to have some housetraining, and takes treats very nicely (the way her bottom row of teeth make an appearance when she lifts her head to sniff for them is the cutest!). She cocks her head when I squeak a stuffy toy and if she were more comfortable I suspect she might play with it. She watches all the people we pass on the street, and when a staff member approaches to say “hi” she is all wiggles. She isn’t outright cuddly, but seems to enjoy soft petting and will even let me rub her bald, pink belly! She is sometimes reactive to dogs that are close by, and the Behavior Department recommends that she do solo for now, but I think we can all agree she’s long overdue for some undivided attention. I thoroughly enjoy all the time I spend with Suger — she is wonderful company! She is waiting at Brooklyn ACC — please come sweeten up your life and brighten hers!
07/26/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Behavior during Intake: Upon intake Suger was calm and relaxed, and allowed handling. During SAFER Suger came into the assessment room fearful, she had a tense body posture when interacting with the assessor, she allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Suger was relaxed during the tag interaction, and during the resource portion of the assessment. Suger was easy to handle when engaged with the item. Although Suger is tolerant of handling, due to her medical condition as well as the discomfort and the irritation associated with her dermatitis, the behavior department feels she would be suitable for an “Experienced” adopter with no young children. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her body posture is tense and fearful; her tail is low and not moving. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is between her legs, body stiff, mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1: 2 Dog gently pulls back her paw, with her body a bit tense. Flank squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all. Flank squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all. Toy: 1. No interest. Dog-dog: 2. Dog does not approach the helper dog. Turns body to side in relation to other dog, or exits. Helper Dog-Lucey
07/25/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Suger was surrendered as a stray so her past behavior around dogs is unknown. 7/27: Suger is sensitive to the other dog’s energy level and proximity to her. She low growls at the dog when he is far away from her and begins to bark. The session is ended. Due to Suger’s skin condition and sensitivity towards other dogs, she is no longer a candidate for playgroup. The Behavior Department recommends that Suger be placed in a home with no other dogs.
