08/22/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 8/20/17 Unaltered male, stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 8/22/17 Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2:1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy 1: No interest. Summary: During the handling assessment Trill was a bit distracted, he attempts to exit between items; though he allowed all handling. He showed no concerning behavior. PLAYGROUP: Trill was surrendered as a stray so we don’t have any past history about his behavior around other dogs however his finder did state that he was dog reactive. Since he has been in the Care Center, Trill has indeed displayed severe barrier frustration and dog reactivity whenever he sees or hears another dog. He lunges in their direction, barking, leaping into the air, snapping and spinning while on his leash. He is difficult to manage safely therefore we do not feel that he is a suitable candidate for playgroup. The Behavior Department recommends that Trill be the only resident dog at this time. INTAKE BEHAVIOR 8/20/17 Trill was very anxious with whining and high pitch barking. Trill allowed all handling and counselor was able to scan for microchip (negative) collar and photograph. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 8/21/17 During the initial examination Trill was very friendly, loose body language. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Trill so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. Trill displayed high energy and movement throughout assessment. Trill will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_ No children (under 13) _X_ Single-pet home/Recommend no dog parks: Due to the concerning behaviors that Trill has shown towards dogs at the Care Center (see GROUP BEHAVIOR SUMMARY), we feel that Trill should not visit dog parks and be the only resident dog. The Behavior Department recommends that he be socialized in a more controlled setting until his behavior towards other dogs can be further addressed and reward-based, force-free training can be utilized to help Trill associate dogs with things he enjoys like toys or treats. _X_ Place with a New Hope partner: Due to the severity, and intensity of Trill’s behavior in the presence of other dogs we believe placement with a new hope rescue group would be most beneficial at this time. Potential challenges: _X_Social hyper-arousal: Trill has displayed low threshold for arousal, rapidly escalating and quickly tipping over to aggression (Barking, Lunging, and snapping.) Immediate intervention and consultation with a qualified veterinary behaviorist/professional trainer is strongly recommended to aid in addressing this issue to prevent further behavioral concerns that may appear in the future if not treated right away. We recommend only force-free, reward based training when introducing or exposing TRill to new and unfamiliar situations _X_ On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: At the care center Trill has been observed to react to other dogs on leash, lunging, barking, and leaping into the air snapping. As Trills plays well with other dogs, this reaction is likely due to excitement and frustration, we recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior. He will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach him to look at you rather than other dogs.
