08/03/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes:Toro means ‘bull’ in Spanish, but there is no resemblance to a bull here, unless you can find a bull who loves to hug, drape himself in your lap for kisses, walks on leash with a fun bouncy step, and seems to be housetrained. In fact, several people stopped me on our walk to ask if his name was Petey (from The Little Rascals, remember?). Toro looks up at everyone we pass on our walk, tail wagging in greeting, and politely met everyone who wanted to meet him. Being tethered for photos was not his thing, so good photos as of this writing were not happening. But, introduce him to a staff person, and more hugs and tail wags made his morning. Who needs good pictures when you have a super friendly personality? Toro’s happy place is draped in a lap or giving stand up hugs, so if you’re a cuddler, too, Toro would love to meet you for a lifetime of love and snuggling. Don’t let those hugs go to waste, come meet him today. Another volunteer writes: Some of the things dogs learn at ACC: 1) People with leashes are our friends, 2) If I sit still and let the person with a camera take a good picture I get a treat! We have such smart dogs!!! Toro quickly figured out a treat held next to a black thing means a treat is coming, so he poses like a pro now wearing a big smile and twinkling eyes. Our vet has confirmed that he’s hearing impaired, so our smart little bull is ready to learn some hand signals to make him the best companion he can be. He’s attentive, smart and treat motivated, and it doesn’t get better than that. Throw in a ton of hugs because that’s what he likes best, and you and he have got it made.
08/01/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 7/30/17 Unaltered Male, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 8/1/17 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Squeeze 1/2: 2. Dog quickly pulls back. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Summary: Toro appeared a bit fearful at times during his assessment, flinching away when the assessor raised her hands and reluctant to approach right away after that. He displayed a high level of activity, jumping up on the assessor and becoming a little mouthy at times. PLAYGROUP: Toro engages in exuberant play with dogs in the care center. At times, he may mount if play slows down, though is easily redirected into other play behavior. The behavior department feels that Toro may be most compatible with playful or tolerant dogs based on these observations. INTAKE BEHAVIOR Upon intake, Toro was friendly and playful. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 7/30/17 During his initial medical exam, Toro was social and allowed handling.
ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Torro so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control: It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. _X_Mouthiness/Poor bite inhibition: Toro has shown some mouthiness in the care center. Little pressure is applied, but this is a behavior that should be extinguished through training alternate behaviors and lack of reward (ex. walking away whenever Toro’s teeth make contact with skin). _X_Fearful: Though observed to be human-social, Toro sometimes presents as a fearful dog, flinching away when a hand is raised and being reluctant to re approach after this. We recommend allowing Toro to interact at his own pace.
08/01/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Toro engages in exuberant play with dogs in the care center. At times, he may mount if play slows down, though is easily redirected into other play behavior. The behavior department feels that Toro may be most compatible with playful or tolerant dogs based on these observations. 8/1: When introduced off leash to dogs, Toro displays a soft, wiggly body when greeting. He follows and attempts to mount males and females. When solicited with play, Toro engages in running chase play. 8/2: Toro engages in exuberant play in a group of male dogs.
