Topanga
Hello, my name is Topanga . My animal id is #16818. I am a female white dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 23-Dec-2017.
Topanga is at risk for medical reasons, having been diagnosed with Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex, which is contagious to other dogs. Behaviorally, we suggest that Topanga would be best suited to a dog experienced home.
Let’s get to know each other a bit more…
A volunteer writes: Topanga is a Native American word/name meaning “where the mountain meets the sea”. It seems very poetic to me, and I actually love the name for this beauty. Her gleaming cow print coat, wagging tail, sweet smile and kisses won me over in a NY minute. She obviously wowed the vet during intake who commented, “playful, wags tail and licks face”. Yup, that’s Topanga!! Her leash manners are pretty good, she likes to make the birds fly, and her lively, fun energy is all about cuddling and kissing at this point. Happy to join me on the bench, Topanga loves to give kisses and enjoys a good massage, closing her eyes as I rub her chest. She’s a sweetheart who was well taken care of before joining us, her weight is perfect for her size, her coat shines, she’s social with both people and other dogs (spinning and play bowing to the male greeter dog). Lively, affectionate and ready to find her forever home, Topanga is hoping you’ll ask to meet her when you visit.

Summary:: Topanga approached the assessor in the assessment room with a soft body and jumped up in a social manner. She was social throughout the assessment and continued to jump up to solicit attention. She was a bit mouthy at times, applying light pressure. She allowed all handling.
Summary:: The behavior department feels that Topanga may be most compatible with dogs who are playful, or tolerant of pushy play. Topanga’s behavior history around other dogs is not available due to arriving as a stray. She has been observed to be exuberant when introduced to dogs in the care center, often soliciting vocal, pushy play.
Summary (1):: 12/24: When introduced off leash to the male greeter dog, Topanga offers brief bows, spins, and vocalizes while play bowing.
Summary (2):: 12/26: Topanga engages in pushy play.
Date of intake:: 12/23/2017
Summary:: Upon intake, Topanga had a waggy tail and wiggly body.
Date of initial:: 12/23/2017
Summary:: Topanga was playful and social.
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Topanga so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm.
IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: Topanga consistently displays highly social behavior with her human caretakers outside of her kennel. She maintains a loose wiggly body throughout interactions and solicits attention from handlers by jumping up and mouthing the handler.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: EXPERIENCE (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with the behaviors outlined below)
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: No young children (under 5)
Recommendations comments:: No young children: Due to the high level of jumping and mouthing seen at the care center, we recommend a home without young children. Older children who are comfortable around large, jumpy dogs should have an in-depth interaction prior to adoption.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition
Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control: It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach her to control her impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: Topanga has shown some mouthiness in the care center. Little pressure is applied, but this is a behavior that should be extinguished through training alternate behaviors and lack of reward (ex. walking away whenever Topanga’s teeth make contact with skin).
