02/22/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Who strolls the concrete jungle with just the right amount of swag and thinks making new friends is the greatest thing since chew bones were invented? Tony the tiger, that’s who! Wearing the most beautiful coat I’ve ever seen and a solemn face to hide his mischievous spirit, this super friendly boy looks like a million bucks and acts like a big ol’ clown and plenty of heads turn to admire him as we strut through the park. We stop for a photo shoot and he accepts treats like a full grown gentleman, but with so much energy to burn, he sometimes forgets that leashes aren’t toys and people aren’t meant for climbing! Tony is young and he’s still got a few rough edges to polish, but he’s smart and ready to learn, and if his current house training skills and ‘sit’ are anything to go by, this happy-go lucky guy will be mastering additional tricks in no time flat. Like any tiger, he loves to explore, but his true calling lies in snuggling, socializing with both two and four-legged friends and finding innovative ways to make everyday life as fun as possible. Tony’s already got the title of World’s Handsomest Pet under his belt and now he’s looking to conquer new challenges with an active, dog savvy family by his side. Potential is his middle name and with your help, Tony P. Tiger is going to be a star!
02/20/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 2/18/17 Unaltered Male, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 2/20/17 Look: 1. Dog leans jumps up to lick the Assessor’s face with tail wagging, ears back and eyes averted. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 3. Dog is playful, jumps up hard and grabs leash. Continues to jumps and grab leash, takes a long time to relinquish leash. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Jumps up and grabs leash. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Summary: Tony became quickly aroused during tag, jumping up and grabbing the leash. He continued to bite the leash after tag, despite the use of toys and things to distract him as well as walking him out of the room. After squeeze, he returned to biting the leash. He did appear social throughout his assessment. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Play Skill Novice: These dogs lack appropriate skills to engage in proper play. They may become stuck on one behavior; lack pauses or breaks in play and often ignores warning signs from other dogs to slow down. Play should end when the other dog in the didactic pair signals it is over. PLAYGROUP: Tony engages in rough, running play with both male and female dogs. His history around other dogs is unknown, so based on interactions seen in the care cetner, the behavior department feels that Tony could go to a home with another social, playful dog. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 2/18/17 During his initial medical exam, Tony allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Tony so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. Tony jumped up moderately on the assessor during the assessment, this jumping appeared to be aimed at getting closer to the assessor and at grabbing his leash. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No young children (under 5): Due to his arousal we recommend a home without young children. Older dog savvy children who are comfortable around large dogs should have an in depth interaction with him. Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control: It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach her to control her impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended.) _X_Social hyper-arousal: Tony quickly becomes over aroused during play, jumping up and grabbing the leash. He has a difficult time settling once play has ended. He would do best in a calm home where people will interact with him in a gentle manner. Positive reinforcement, reward based training is recommended, as well as a great deal of both physical and mental exercise. _X_Leash-biting _X_Strength/leash pulling: Tony is a very large, strong dog with the capability to pull over an average adopter. His adopter must be prepared and able to handle a dog of this size and strength. It is recommended that he be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which help diminish his strength through leverage, and that he be trained using positive reinforcement, reward based training to not pull on leash.
