SAFE 08/12/17

My name is TONI. My Animal ID # is A1120766.
I am a male white chihuahua sh mix. The shelter thinks I am about 7 YEARS old.

I came in the shelter as a STRAY on 08/03/2017 from NY 10029, owner surrender reason stated was STRAY.

08/11/2017 AT RISK MEMO
Toni A1120766 is at risk for a New Hope Only behavior determination and for CIRDC. He has allowed very little touch or handling, quickly escalates to high-level warning behaviors (lunging, snapping), and a handling assessment could not be conducted.

08/03/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
08/03/17 17:03 During intake the dog was trembling with his tail tucked between his legs. He seemed very scared and in pain. He did not allow handling and was barking/trying to bite. He allowed his Finder to approach him in the park and pick him up and carrried him and was not aggressive with his Finder. The dogs back legs seem to be sensitive; when the Finder touched the back legs/back area the dog yelped.

08/06/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 8/3/17 Unaltered Male, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 8/6/17 Summary: Toni is difficult to remove from the kennel, lunging and snapping at the leash. He appears to be uncomfortable or afraid of the slip lead. He has also allowed minimal handling from his caretakers. Out of concern for his stress levels and his response to restraint, we feel Toni is not a good candidate for a handling assessment at this time. PLAYGROUP: 8/8: When introduced off leash to dogs, Toni allows calm approach, though doesn’t seek interaction. INTAKE BEHAVIOR Upon intake, Toni had a tucked tail and was barking and snapping. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 8/3/17 During his initial medical exam, Toni was snapping and did not allow handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Toni so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. In the care center, he displays a low level of activity. RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No young children (under 5): Due to how uncomfortable Toni is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Toni has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home. Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Toni has been very fearful at the care center and has allowed only minimal handling since intake, snapping when attempts are made to handle him. It is important to always go slow and give Toni the option to walk away from any social interaction. Toni should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Toni’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Toni would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to him new surroundings.

08/08/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
8/8: When introduced off leash to dogs, Toni allows calm approach, though doesn’t seek interaction.
