A volunteer writes: Look up the definition of “bruiser” in the dictionary and it would simply say “Tommy” – and I mean that in the best of ways. He’s an awesome big boy, a chunky monkey low rider with a big blockhead and the gentlest manners ever. He smiles and wags his tail as he wins hearts all over the place. How can you not love this guy? He sits for treats before I even ask, takes them gently, and patiently waits for another. Up on the bench for some kisses, he’s the gentlest guy and I felt like I won the lottery with his first kiss. When our time together was over I took the leash down and Tommy became a total wiggle butt, so excited to be leashed as to him a leash means ‘I’m going out, yay!’. Sadly for both of us, it meant we’re going in, but good sport that he is I can hear him think ‘ok, whatever’. We’d love to look up ‘bruiser’ in the dictionary again, and see the definition read: ‘Tommy, adopted by…….(insert your name here). Come meet him today.
07/12/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Tommy was brought into the care center by police, so we have no information on his behavior in his previous home. He arrived with another male dog of similar size, build, and behavior. He was easy to handle during his medical examination. He pulls hard on leash when walked, but was social with the assessor when brought into the room for his behavior evaluation. Tommy allowed all handling without issue, frequently jumping on the assessor for attention. He engaged with the toy, picking it up and moving it away from the assessor, but he was loose-bodied throughout and traded for a treat at the end. No concerning behaviors were seen during his SAFER assessment so we feel Tommy is appropriate for an adopter with an average amount of experience. We recommend a front-clip harness to help address Tommy’s pulling on leash, and he may need some reward-based guidance to learn not to jump (jumping, if undesired, should be extinguished by removing attention when he jumps, turning your back or walking away, and then rewarding him with attention when he has all 4 feet on the ground). We also recommend teaching Tommy “drop” and playing trade up games; nothing should ever be taken away from him without trading for a larger reward. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1 & 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed or back. Toy: 2. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. His body is between you and the toy, and he is loose and wiggly. No growling or stiffness.
07/18/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Due to CIRDC status, Tommy was unable to be introduced off-leash to another dog. Tommy arrived into our care with another male dog, however there is no background information on their relationship in-home. The behavior team recommends a pre-adoption interaction between Tommy and any potential resident dogs. It is unknown how his behavior around dogs will translate into a home.
