03/20/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
03/20/17 14:12 Basic Information: Toby is a 6 and a half year old neutered male Pitbull Terrier/Beagle Mix that has no past or current medical issues that the owner is aware of. Owner has had Toby for a month and a half but had to surrender due to Toby biting the owner several times. Socialization: According to the owner, around strangers Toby is shy for a few minutes at first but once he warms up, he plays gently with adults. He has not been around children or cats while in the care of the owner so behavior is unknown. Owner had a neutered male Pug in the home and stated that Toby was always respectful and relaxed around the other animal. Toby does have a bite history with the most recent bite being a month ago. Behavior: Toby is not bothered by loud noises, having his toys taken away, being pushed off furniture, or being held/restrained. When owner would try to take away Toby’s food or treats, Toby would growl. Owner has never tried to brush his coat, bathe Toby or trim his nails so behavior is unknown. When unfamiliar people would approach the home, Toby would bark. For a New Family to Know: Toby is described as friendly, affectionate, playful, and excitable. He has a medium activity level and likes to play with all types of toys especially bones and squeaky toys. In the home, he would like to follow the owner around from room to room. Toby was kept mostly indoors and is house trained. In the home, owner fed Toby both wet and dry food brand Pedigree. When Toby was left alone in the home, he was always well behaved. He knows the cues sit, go and stand up. For exercise, owner would take Toby on brisk walks on the leash. When on the leash, Toby does not pull. Owner has never tried to take him on off leash walks.

RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_ Place with New Hope partner: Due to Toby’s multiple bite history, the behavior department recommends Toby be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Toby to acclimate comfortably to his new environment, we recommend only force-free, reward-based training methods as more aversive techniques will likely increase fear and increase the risk of aggression. Potential challenges: _X_House soiling: Toby is reported to be partially housetrained and have some accidents in the home. He will need guidance and consistency to learn to eliminate outside. We recommend frequent walks and regularly scheduled feeding times, with rewards whenever Toby eliminates outside (treats and praise). Accidents should never been punished as it can damage the human-dog relationship and is likely to make the problem worse. X__Multiple-bite history: Toby has bitten his new owner when corrected for a housetraining accident and while having a harness put on. He gives clear warnings (growling) when uncomfortable and seems to choose to avoid or retreat when given the opportunity, but if prevented from moving away there is a potential to escalate to higher-level warning behaviors and possible fear-based aggression. It is important to only use force-free, reward based training methods for Toby as more aversive techniques are likely to increase fear and increase the risk of an escalation to a bite. Toby should never be forced to interact with new people or submit to any type of forced petting or handling he does not initiate.
