A volunteer writes: If you couldn’t tell by his ear to ear grin, his frogged out legs and his grip on his favorite blue ball, Toby is a total HAM! He had me cracking up playing in the yard…running around with the ball, tossing it to himself, and eventually tiring himself out and laying down with it. It’s hard to believe this carefree boy was recently found by the police, wandering the streets alone. It’s clear his history doesn’t get him down, and he greets everyone with a friendly tail wag and even a kiss. Toby seems housetrained, walks nicely on the leash and knows how to sit on command. Give Toby a chance, and I bet he’ll wander right into your heart. Ask to meet him today!
06/22/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 6/7/17 Unaltered Male, Stray Bite history: Yes, Toby bit handler when handler attempted to remove chicken bone from mouth, resulting in two punctures. Other notes: SAFER ASSESSMENT: 6/9/17 Look:2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity:1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1&2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy 1: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Summary: Toby was friendly and playful towards the assessor. PLAYGROUP: When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Toby displays soft body language when greeting a novel female dog. He is social, checking in on her often, and displays bouncy body language when solicited to play. INTAKE BEHAVIOR 6/7/17: Upon intake Toby was friendly and allowed all handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 6/8/17: During his medical examination, Toby was active and attention seeking, he allowed all handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Toby so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience adult-only home (Suitable for an adopter with a previous amount of dog experience) _X_No children: Due to Toby’s poor bite inhibition, we recommend an adult-only home at this time. _x_ Recommends no dog parks: Due to Toby’s low displays of sociability towards intact male dogs, the Behavior Department recommends that he be socialized in a more controlled setting. Potential challenges: _X_Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: Toby appears to lack appropriate bite inhibition; decreasing the force of the mouth as well as the frequency of mouthing, in this order is recommended by using force-free, reward based training as well to reinforce a soft appropriate mouth and redirect hard inappropriate mouthing onto toys.

Another volunteer writes: This guy, this guy IS a smile! Are you looking for a pet to bring pure joy into your life? If so, Toby is your guy!! As soon as we met, I couldn’t help but grin ear to ear and giggle. He walks around with his head held high just smiling, happy to be outside on a beautiful day; happy to be anywhere! He is a gem! He walks so nicely next me, occasionally looking up at me to give me his now signature grin. My walk with Toby was the highlight of my day!
