Tj
Hello, my name is Tj. My animal id is #15219. I am a male tan dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 12 years 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 15-Dec-2017, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- landlord won’t allow.
TJ is a geriatric gentleman who is at risk for medical reasons, having been diagnosed with Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex, which is contagious to other dogs. TJ also has some underlying issues related to his geriatric status, including dental disease. We suggest that TJ would be best suited to an experienced dog home.
My medical notes are…

[Spay/Neuter Waiver – Age] It is the policy of ACC not to perform surgery on any animal over the age of 8-10 years due to the higher risks incurred in a shelter setting. The veterinarian is hereby issuing a permanent spay/neuter waiver, from the spay/neuter requirements of the City of NY due to the estimated age of this animal. ACC does recommend you consult with your veterinarian to determine if surgical sterilization is appropriate.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: EXPERIENCE (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with the behaviors outlined below)
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: No young children (under 5)
Recommendations comments:: No young children: Due to the behavior seen in the care center and reported by his previous owner, we feel that Bentley may be intimidated by young children. He needs a slow approach and time to warm up. He should never be forced to interact with new people, and should be allowed to greet and initiate an interaction at his own pace. Older, gentle children should have an in-depth interaction prior to adoption.
Potential challenges: : Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: TJ is described to be shy with new people bu his previous owner. In the care center, he appears a bit fearful. It is important to always go slow and give TJ the option to walk away from any social interaction. TJ should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be TJ’s choice to approach a new person or thing. TJ would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings.
