BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:  ADULT ONLY HOME
Behavior Asilomar; TM – Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:  No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:  No children (under 13): Tivo displays fearful behavior at the care center and been reported to growl when people put their face near his face. His previous owner described him as playing rough with children. For these reasons, we recommend an adult only home.
Potential challenges:  Destructive behavior; Fearful/potential for defensive aggression;  Separation anxiety

Potential challenges comments:
Separation anxiety: Tivo is reported to become anxious and destructive when left home alone. We recommend that potential adopters feel comfortable with separation anxiety behaviors and prepared to manage and positively modify them should they appear in a home environment. We recommend that someone be around the majority of the time in Tivo’s new home or that a plan is in place for him to not be alone for long time periods.
Destructive behavior: Tivo is reported to show destructive behavior in the home, such as chewing on furniture. We suggest to future adopters that Tivo will need to be provided with physical and mental stimulation and with a variety of appropriate and engaging chew toys so he can engage in necessary chewing behavior without damage to human objects.
Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Tivo had been fearful at the care center at times. He is also reported to growl when people put their faces in his face. No one should ever put their face next to Tivo’s face or attempt to kiss his face. It is important to always go slow and give Tivo the option to walk away from any social interaction. Tivo should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Tivo’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Tivo would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings.

A Little Bit About Me…

A volunteer writes: Who can resist a dog with one blue eye and one brown eye? Especially when the young man they belong to is so handsome and has been so well cared for? Tivo may have started out as being timid with me, but his shyness slowly faded away as we ventured through the nearby park. His tail waves steadily as his eyes discover what an unhurried spring has to offer–chirping birds, bouncy squirrels and other dogs. He whimpers a little nearing them and is clearly interested when they are females. A boisterous exchange between two pooches gets his attention. I almost see him shaking his head. Tivo knows better. He decides to get to know me and hops on the bench, his body half on my lap. He is quite gentle, likes caresses and to give kisses. Back in the care center, the ice was broken and Tivo was so much more confident, even starting to play with a rope, running after the toy and jumping to catch it. I was so glad to see that he was feeling better. I even got a smile. Tivo is known to be very active, affectionate, playful and friendly to all, stranger, kids and his female housemate. He lived all his life inside his home and yard. His walk to the care center was his first ever. He certainly did well with me. Seems like he is a fast learner. Young Tivo is likely an energetic dog who needs an active new owner or family who can provide action and fun together with stability and love. Tivo promises in return, to be the forever best friend you ever dreamed of.

Let’s get to know each other a bit more…

Basic Information: Tivo is a brown and white 2 year old male medium mixed breed dog. He lived with his previous owner for 2 years. He was surrendered due to destructive tendencies.

Previously lived with: 2 adults

How is this dog around strangers? Tivo is friendly and outgoing around strangers, if his owner is around. His owner states that he plays very roughly with adults.

How is this dog around children? Tivo was often around his owners 5 year old niece. She stated that Tivo was very playful and affectionate with her. When shes at over the house, Tivo spends all his time with her. Tivo plays roughly with her.

How is this dog around other dogs? Tivo lives with a 3 year old female pitbull. They got along until she was altered. Tivo sometimes tries to mount the other dog, and she becomes aggressive with him. When she scratches or bites him, he just walks away.

How is this dog around cats? Tivo has never lived with cats. He chases and barks at strays when they’re near the backyard.

Resource guarding: Tivo isn’t bothered when his food bowl is taken away from him while hes eating. He also isn’t bothered when a treat or toy is taken away from him.

Bite history: Tivo has never bitten or scratched a person. He has never bitten or scratched another animal, however, the previous dog that he lived with would often scratch and bite him, which have previously drawn blood.

Housetrained: Yes

Energy level/descriptors: Very high energy level, affectionate, playful

Other Notes: Tivo is friendly when he’s asked to get down from furniture. He isn’t bothered when hes disturbed while sleeping. He enjoys being bathed and brushed. He allows people to touch his paws. He barks when unfamiliar people approaches the yard. He has accidents in the house every once in a while. He often destroys stuff indoors such as cables. Outdoors, he destroys almost everything that is made out of plastic such as plastic chairs, hoses, and lawn mower tires.

Medical Notes : Tivo came in with two wounds, one on each ear. Other than that he has no known medical issues.

For a New Family to Know : Tivo likes to play fetch with balls. He was kept as an indoors and outdoors dog. He wasn’t walked but he used the bathroom and ran around a grass backyard. He sleeps on a balcony on a sheet. He’s free fed dry pedigree food. He rarely has accidents in the house, when he’s not allowed to go outside. When left alone, he often destroys household items like mattresses and cables. When he’s left alone in the backyard, he destroys plastic chairs and hoses. He was crate trained as a puppy but doesn’t need it now. For exercise he likes to run and play in the yard. He’s never been on a leash until he was brought in for the appointment. His owner stated that he didn’t pull on the leash at all.

Behavior Notes: Upon intake Tivo had his tail tucked under his body. He tried to hide between his owners legs. He allowed me to collar him, and laid down for a picture. He began panting when I tried to walk him to the back and refused to move. He was stiff bodied when we picked him up.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: EXPERIENCE (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with the behaviors outlined below)

Recommendations: No young children (under 5)

Recommendations comments: No young children: Tivo displays fearful behavior at the care center. His previous owner described him as playing rough with children. For these reasons, we recommend a home without young children. Older, dog-savvy children, should have an in-depth interaction prior to adoption.

Potential challenges: Destructive behavior, Fearful

Potential challenges comments:

Destructive behavior: Tivo is reported to show destructive behavior in the home, such as chewing on household items. We are unaware of what, if any, attempts were made to remedy this behavior but we suggest to future adopters that Tivo will need to be provided with physical and mental stimulation and with a variety of appropriate and engaging chew toys so he can engage in necessary chewing behavior without damage to human objects.

Fearful: Tivo is fearful at the care center.
