Hello, my name is Tildon. My animal id is #11649. I am a male black dog at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 03-Nov-2017.

Sensitivity:: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth.

Tag:: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Dog might jump on Assessor once play begins.

Paw squeeze 2:: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Eyes are averted and ears are relaxed or back.

Summary:: During the handling assessment Tildon was energetic, and playful. He allowed all handling, and was social towards the assessor(Jumping up,playful,loose).

Summary (1):: Tildon was surrendered as a stray so his previous behavior around other dogs is unknown. 11/04: When off leash at the Care Center, Tildon enters the pens with a soft body and wagging tail as he is introduced to a novel female dog. He is sexually motivated, but does not mount and listens well to any handlers interruptions. 11/05: Tildon greets an intact male briefly, with a lowered and tucked posture. He tolerates some genital sniffing and muzzle licks but does not reciprocate play when solicited– he retreats and hides. 11/06: In a group of calm male and female dogs, Tildon greets them with a tucked but wiggly posture several times, each time however he scurries away and hides under the table. Towards the end of the session, Tildon approaches a calm male dog, raising his hackles and mounts him while growling. He is easily interrupted and retreats to under the table.

Date of intake:: 11/3/2017

Summary:: Tildon was friendly, and allowed all handling.

Date of initial:: 11/4/2017

Summary:: Tildon allowed handling, attention seeking, and friendly.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Tildon so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. Tildon displayed high energy and movement throughout assessment. He will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised.

IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: 11/7/17: Sheldon was observed by a staff member to be guarding a high value treat in his kennel when his kennel was approached. The He bared his teeth, growled and lunged slightly over top the treat.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: EXPERIENCE (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with the behaviors outlined below)

Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: Due to potential food guarding behavior shown in the care center, Tildon gave an appropriate warning of his discomfort (bare teeth,growl)but we feel that young children may not know to respect this warning. Older, dog savvy children can be considered as long as the adults feel confident that Tildon can be left alone while eating so she does not need to escalate from a growl. Behavior modification for food guarding behavior can be found at aspcapro.org.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding

Potential challenges comments:: Tildon is reported to bare teeth, growl and lunge over food. He should be left alone while eating, and should be taught the cue “drop” and other trade up games so Tildon learns that dropping food or having people around while he is eating is rewarding. Behavior modification protocols for food guarding behavior can be found on aspcapro.org
