02/25/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
02/25/17 19:35 Basic Information Tiago is an approximate 5 year old male American Pit Bull Terrier. He was brought in by the police after they were called by someone who stated Tiago attacked their cat. Police never handled Tiago. ESU placed Tiago in a large carrier. Tiago struggled to be placed in a carrier, by growling and barking. Behavior during Intake Tiago was a little tense and would give the side eye when approached. He did eat treats from my hand and had a wagging tail. When I went to collar him he became very stiff so i stopped.

03/05/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Limited Profile 2/25/17 Unaltered Male, Stray Behavior toward cats: Has killed a cat. Bite history: Yes, bit and killed a cat. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 3/5/17 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game with coaxing. He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 1. No interest. Summary: Tiago was disconnected from the assessor for most of the assessment, focusing on stimuli other than the assessor. He allowed all handling. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: Summary MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 2/25/17 During his initial medical exam, Tiago allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Tiago so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No young children (under 5): Due to fearful behavior exhibited in the care center, we recommend a home without young children. Older, dog savvy children should have an in depth interaction prior to adoption. _X_No cats: Tiago has killed a cat so he must be placed in a home without cats. Potential challenges: _X_Fearful (Tiago becomes tense at times in the care center. It is important to always go slow and give Tiago the option to walk away from any social interaction. Tiago should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Tiago’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Tiago would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings.) _X_On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration ((Tiago has growled and lunged at dog while on leash. We recommend the use of positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach Taz a “Look” cue, to focus on the person walking him rather than on his surroundings, when passing other dogs.)
