BEHAVIOR: 4/15/16 SAFER: ENC
Thumbalina came to us as a stray so we don’t have any behavior information other than what has been observed while in the shelter system. When approaching Thumbalina’s kennel she can be seen inside the kennel demand barking on occasion. Once coming out of the kennel Thumbalina is nervous, stress panting but walks well on the leash. She was a bit hesitant to interact with the assessor initially coming into the behavior room. After a couple of minutes she approached the assessor and sniffed him allowing the assessor to pet her. She allowed the assessor to conduct all tactile assessment items without displaying any signs of aggression. Thumbalina did have fearful and tense body language throughout the assessment but did not escalate to more concerning behaviors. She would constantly spin quickly away from the touch, and crouching her backside when the touch was attempted with slightly tense body language. She did not allow the assessor to conduct the initial squeeze test constantly moving her body away from the assessor with very nervous body language. The flank item was conducted instead where she had tense and fearful body language. Due to Thumbalina’s very fearful nature we recommend she go to a home with an experienced adopter and no children at this time.
Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, but is fearful in posture. Allows head to be held loosely. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds.
Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, tail is in neutral position with fearful body posture, but soft to the touch. Dog’s mouth is closed for a portion of the item.
Tag: 3. Dog repeatedly turns quickly away when touched, and repeatedly tucks her backside when touch is attempted. Dog may be crouching, tail is tucked, mouth closed, body stiff.
Squeeze 1: 3. Dog is fearful, moves her legs/body so that the Assessor is unable to hold the paw
Flank squeeze 2. Dog does not respond at all, tucks in hind area, body a bit tense.
Flank squeeze 2. Dog does not respond at all tucks in hind area, body a bit tense.
Toy: 1. Minimal interest. Dog smells, licks and mouths, then walks away.
GROUP BEHAVIOR
Thumbalina enters the pen with a low body and a tucked tail, and was reluctant to greet at the gate. The pen door was opened while a handler was holding the other dogs leash to allow Thumbalina the chance to approach him. She avoided all interaction by increasing her distance whenever the other dog would attempt to greet her.
