Thor A1125641 is at risk for a New Hope Only behavior determination. He has made progress in the care center and has warmed up to select handlers, but has been timid at first meeting to the point of panicking and shutting down. A volunteer writes
Thor might look as stunning as a Norse god but he acts as shaken as a little boy lost….His owner or finder left him with us without a word so we do not know anything about him but that he seems healthy and was beautifully cared for. Thor is overwhelmed by his kennel and comes to life in the open with people gently handling him and the help of his peers. I have rarely seen a dog going from being a Bernard L’Hermitte to a bouncy deer in so little time…..Miracle, another puppy got him quickly out of his shell. They were such a lovely ballet evolving on the backyard grass that Thor was subsequently used as a helper dog in playgroup. He started also to prance with his caretakers… Thor was reborn…..Still, back in his den, although better, Thor looks so scared. He so deserves better…A home, a family, may be a four legged friend to play with and not the 4 walls of a kennel. Thor needs you now. Come and meet him today at the Manhattan Care Center.
09/18/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Known History: None 09/15/2017 Intact male, owner surrender SAFER ASSESSMENT: 09/17/2017 Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted, distracted and focused on handler, his tail is low and not moving. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, head low, his tail is between his legs, body a bit tense Tag: 3. Dog does not follow at the end of the leash, fearful but unresponsive when touched. He does not approach at the end of the game, crouched. Squeeze: 3 Dog head flips during positioning, then yelps Toy: 1 No interest Summary: Thor became uncomfortable with up close tactile handling, particularly on Tag and Squeeze, giving appropriate warning when uncomfortable. Out of concern for his stress levels, the remaining tactile portion of the assessment was skipped. PLAYGROUP: History around dogs is unknown due to Thor arriving as a stray. Thor has appeared fearful in the shelter environment, but has been observed to warm up significantly in the presence of other dogs, displaying social and playful behavior. Thor has beein utilized as a play group greeter dog. The behavior department feels that Thor may be compatible with other social dogs, and may even benefit from continued play and socialization with dogs in the future. The behavior department recommends slow introductions between Thor and social dogs. INTAKE BEHAVIOR: 09/15/2017 Upon intake, Thor was tense MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 09/16/2017 During his initial medical examination, Thor was fearful ENERGY: We have no history on Thor so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. In the care center, Thor displays as fearful but when comfortable a medium level of energy.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope _X_No children (under 13): Due to how uncomfortable Thor is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. _X_Place with a New Hope partner – Thor is slowly warming up at the center, allowing handling all over from select staff he has warmed up to. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can patiently provide a calm, quiet, structured home environment so he can relax and acclimate at his own pace. Potential challenges: _X_Handling/touch sensitivity: Thor has been noted to become uncomfortable with handling at times as he remains very fearful in the shelter environment. It is important to always go slow and give Thor the option to walk away from any social interaction. Thor should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Thor’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Thor may do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings. _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Thor is uncomfortable with quick movements and hesitant to walk through doorways/thresholds. He gives clear warnings when he is uncomfortable and does seem to choose to avoid or retreat when given the opportunity, but if prevented from moving away there is a potential to escalate to higher-level warning behaviors and possible fear-based aggression. It is important to move slowly with Thor, he should be spoken to softly and gently. He should never be forced to greet or to interact if he is not comfortable and soliciting attention. It should be noted once comfortable with handler’s Thor is affectionate and soft, seeking comfort from new environments and people by leaning in and staying close. _X_Anxiety – Thor has shown some signs of potential anxiety in the care center (whining, seeking exit). This behavior was not reported at intake, and we have no history on Thor, so we cannot be certain whether similar behaivor will be seen in a future home environment.
