Soft, shy and gentle as a lamb, I had to laugh when I met Thor as he couldn’t be less like his thundering namesake if he tried! A gorgeous hound wearing the most perfect half-mask atop his adorably freckled nose, Thor’s always dressed to impress and his quiet good manners make him the perfect ‘plus one’ for any occasion. He’s spent time with small children and a cat and was always tolerant and respectful, meets new doggie or human friends like a total gentleman and performed wonderfully in group too, engaging in bouncy yet easy-going play with all the single ladies. Walking wonderfully on leash and seemingly house trained, every stroll with Thor is an absolute breeze and I catch more than one admirer giving my handsome date a second glance as we pass by. Off leash in the yard he spends most of his time exploring but eagerly seeks out lap snuggles and nose-to-cheek snufflies once I get down on his level and I suspect he’s secretly a couch cuddler at heart. We’re told he can feel a bit anxious when his people aren’t around but he’s already crate trained and having that safe space to retreat to will help soothe his worries as he transitions into a new home. It’s easy to picture Thor basking in the love glow of a new forever family but there’s only one way to really make it happen. Another volunteer writes: How did such a squiggly mushball of a pup come to wear the name of the ancient Norse god of thunder, aka Marvel comics’ “Mighty Thor”? Hmm, maybe this adorable little dog is hiding a superhero within! He certainly showed super-dog traits while at a large offsite event. Lots of loud noises from the crowds of people and automobiles passing by, along with dozens of other dogs and cats in the vicinity — no problem! Ask Thor to sit, before he gently accepts the treat I am offering — got it! Let’s take a walk — ok! Though he is already amazing, let’s not forget that our superhero Thor is still very young, and he needs someone to give him the time, patience, stability and training to help him grow into a truly super dog. Super sweet, tiny-but-mighty Thor awaits, come and see him today!

Basic information: Thor is a 1 year old brindle and white large dog. He was returned to MACC to because his new owners had no time. Thor had no known injuries or health problems.
During intake: Thor had a loose body and waggy tail. He was receptive to handling and allowed his harness to be removed. He allowed the admissions counselor to collar him. He was barking and charging at the door. He sat on command but was not interested in treats. He stretched on the admissions counselor gently and would get back down when told to do so.

Energy level/descriptors: Friendly, affectionate, playful, and excitable with a high activity level.
Other notes: Thor is fearful of baths and nail trims, will try to exit. Thor is crate trained.
SAFER ASSESSMENT:
Date of assessment 9/15/2017
Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands.
Sensitivity: 2. Dog accepts the touch, focused on other stimuli, seeking exit.
Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, alert and cautious
 Squeeze 1 / 2: 2. Dog quickly pulls back
Toy 1: 1. Dog engages with toy, keeps a firm grip, body loose. He does not place his body between you and the toy.
Summary: Thor was somewhat focused on environment outside the SAFER room, at times seeking exit. He was fairly distracted and displaying high energy and movement throughout his assessment though displayed no behavior concerns.
PLAYGROUP:
Thor’s previous guardian reported that he has not been around other dogs.
9/11: When off leash at the Care Center, Thor greets the female helper dog with a soft, loose, wiggly body. He solicits and engages in very respectful, gentle bouncy play and takes breaks often.
9/16: Thor engages in bouncy play with female dogs.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:
Date of initial 9/15/2017
During his initial medical exam, Thor displayed high energy and movement, allowed all handling.
ENERGY LEVEL: Previous owner reports Thor has a high activity level which matches what we have seen in the care center. Thor will require daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend walks, runs, exercise, and play to positively direct his enthusiasm.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially in the behavior outlined below)
Potential challenges:
_X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control – thor displayed high energy and movement throughout his assessment, and overall basic puppy wiggly enthusiasm. It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended.
_X_-Anxiety- His short-term owner reports Thor is anxious when home alone. We recommend continuing with crate training to help decrease any anxiety from being in a new environment. The crate should never be used as a punishment and only associated with positive things. Always have high value chews and toys accessible to Thor when he is in his crate to help diminish any anxiousness.
