A volunteer writes: “When you’re happy and you know it wag your tail…wag, wag, wag”. Puppy Thor is not only a handsome face and a gorgeous body, he’s a friendly, happy, playful and affectionate pup, ready to love a new person or family. Having lived with three young children, ages 1 mo., 2 and 4 years old, he’s learned to be respectful of them in his puppy play. And, because he’s a young and energetic pup, play should always be monitored. We’re told he likes to play tug (he brought the tug toy over to me to play, so cute!), is housetrained when walked regularly, is crate trained, enjoys baths (which explains his gorgeously clean white coat), and barks when the doorbell rings. We’re also told that Thor will chew shoes and go through garbage when left alone, so pick up your shoes and put your garbage away. He’s a puppy! I loved spending time with this happy, handsome, bright eyed pup who posed for photos brilliantly, took treats gently, and came into my lap for some hugs and kisses. His leash manners are good, he checks up often as we walk, and is everything a puppy should be. He even got the zoomies on leash in the park, ending in a play bow before we moved on! He’s smart, fun, funny and engaging, and the only thing missing from his life right now is you. So, if a bright eyed, fun loving, lively pup is your idea of the perfect fit for your lifestyle, come meet puppy Thor today.
08/27/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Full Profile 8/25/17 Unaltered Male, Owner Surrender (In previous home for five months) Previously lived with: Adults and children (ages 1 month, 2 years, and 4 years) Behavior toward strangers: Friendly Behavior toward children: Respectful, plays a bit rough Behavior toward dogs: Unknown Behavior toward cats: Unknown Resource guarding: None reported Bite history: None reported Housetrained: No Energy level/descriptors: Thor is described as friendly, affectionate, and playful with a high level of activity. Other notes: Thor barks and becomes anxious when left home alone. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 8/27/17 Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. His body is soft, panting, jumps up between attempts to lick Assessor. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game with coaxing. He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1/2: 2. Dog gently places his open mouth over the Assessor’s hand without applying pressure. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Summary: Thor displayed a high level of activity and movement on his assessment, jumping up on the assessor and mouthing. He was social throughout and allowed all handling. PLAYGROUP: Thor plays exuberantly with other dogs in the care center. The previous owner of Thor does not report history around other dogs. Based on observations made in the care center, the behavior department feels Thor may be most compatible with other dogs who are highly playful and social. INTAKE BEHAVIOR: Upon intake, Thor was excited and rope reactive, he would not allow collaring. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 8/26/17 During his initial medical exam, Thor was tense but allowed handling.
ENERGY LEVEL: His previous owners describe Thor as a high-energy dog. In the care center he has been active and enthusiastic. He may have a low threshold for arousal and needs guidance to learn how to appropriately channel that energy when he becomes overstimulated. He will need daily mental and physical stimulation and exercise, and a force-free, positive reinforcement-based training class may help him to learn impulse control and to train desirable behaviors that can be rewarded. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No young children (under 5): Due to the high amount of jumping and mouthiness seen at the care center, as well as Thor’s previous owner reported that he plays rough with children, we recommend a home without young children. Older children who are comfortable around large, jumpy dogs should have an in-depth interaction prior to adoption. Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control: It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. _X_Mouthiness/Poor bite inhibition: Thor has shown some mouthiness in the care center. Little pressure is applied, but this is a behavior that should be extinguished through training alternate behaviors and lack of reward (ex. walking away whenever Thor’s teeth make contact with skin). _X_Anxiety: Thor’s previous owner reported that he is anxious when left home alone. When Thor is left alone, he should be given food based chew toys such as Kongs and puzzle toys so that he has something to do. If this behavior poses a problem in a new home, a positive reinforcement, reward based professional trainer/behaviorist should be consulted.
