10/12/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: N/A Intact male, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 10/11/16 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game. Toy item: No interest Summary: Not all tactile items were able to be conducted as Thor growled at the assessor when attempting to restrain him for paw squeeze item. He displayed no interest in any of the resource item during this portion of the assessment. In light of this behavior we feel that placement with a rescue that can provide positive reinforcement-based behavior modification is the best option at this time. PLAYGROUP: Thor was brought in as a stray so his behavior around other dogs is unknown. 10/9 – 10/11: When off leash at the Care Center, Thor greets and is social with other small male and female dogs but mostly keeps to himself, exploring the area. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 10/10/16 During his initial medical examination, Thor appeared highly uncomfortable; he tolerated very minimal handling. RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13) (See potential challenges) _X_Place with a New Hope partner (The behavior department believes Thor may benefit best from placement with a New Hope Rescue at this time may be most beneficial to assess his behavior in a more stable environment before placement into a permanent home.) Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression (Thor has been observed to display fearful behavior during his stay at our care centers; at times will avoid interaction and shy away from direct-touch. Thor easily startles and is made uncomfortable by loud noises and sudden movement and will display proper warning signals as well as increase distance from anything that may present a threat. We cannot be certain if any other behavior is suppressed as a result of his environment. A period of decompression is advised before introduction or exposure to new and unfamiliar situations. Force-free, reward based training is advised.)
