09/01/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Terri came to us with sister Lola as his owners could not care for them anymore. Owned since early puppyhood, Terri is described as a lively, affectionate, outgoing and sociable dog, accepting of strangers and living in harmony with a five year old child and his sister. Terri is quite shy within our walls, although with the help of staff and volunteers, he is slowly coming out of his shell. He gets all excited when he sees people he knows, wags his tail happily and prances toward his person of interest. He is a good “bench dog” and likes to be hugged, his half body on the lap of his caretaker. Terri can not fit although he so wants to. He is a big dog but nevertheless, a handsome and elegant one who has been beautifully cared for by his former family, so well groomed, absolutely gorgeous and reminding me of a hound. Terri takes treats gently, sits on command after a few prompts and pulls slightly on the leash. He is a bit timid in playgroups with his peers but we have to remember that aside from his sister, he never really mingle with other pooches….until now. He is not a fan going back to his kennel, which is perfectly understandable, but he is gently welcoming when someone shows up at his door. Terri is a very likable young man, elegant and handsome, a former family dog who will make once again a wonderful, loyal and loving forever companion. Come and meet him soon at the Manhattan Care Center.
A volunteer writes as told by Terry: Hi, I’m Terry, and although I’m a big goofy looking guy, I’m kind of scared in this new place, and really shy. I love to make new friends, and I love to cuddle, walk really nicely on leash and check up with my person often. But the barking dogs, all the movement, all the new ‘stuff’ I’m not used to , it makes me nervous, ya know what I mean? Get me out of the building and I’m a gem (that’s what they call me), I go potty, like to hang out with my person and enjoy some petting. I’m called a playgroup rock-star because I do really well with other dogs, and there’s a sign on my kennel that says that. How cool is that? It’s good to be famous ! I’m as gentle and soft as can be, a volunteer and staff favorite, and one of the staff even calls me her ‘husband’ because she loves me so much. All these smart people know a good boy when they meet one, so if they’re singing my praises it must be true. Come meet me and find out for yourself.
08/29/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR

DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: 8/29: When introduced off leash to a calm female dog, Terry greets politely with wagging tail, then wanders the pen. INTAKE BEHAVIOR: Upon intake, Terry had a tense body and would not walk. He allowed himself to be carried to a kennel. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Terry so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: (Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) Potential challenges: _X_Fearful: Terry is fearful at the care center but quickly warms up to people. It is important to always go slow and give Terry the option to walk away from any social interaction. Terry should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Terry’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Terry would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings.
