03/16/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
03/16/16 14:49 Behavior during intake: This dog was a little nervous at first. I sat with him for a few minutes and let him sniff me. He then allowed me to pet him on the head and back. he put his head in my lap and allowed me to collar him.
03/21/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: The first English translation of the Japanese word “Temoto” is “on hand.” The second is “at home.” I think I’ll take the second. Surrendered to our care as his owner was moving where he wasn’t welcome, 8 month-old Temoto is a wildly adorable young lad and, boy, does he know it. He waits for me quietly in his kennel, looking up ever so slightly with that worried brow and a “see how calm and patient I am???” expression. Of course I fall for it hook, line, and sinker. It’s only as we exit the building and enter an open pen that Temoto feels comfortable “unleashing” his inner puppy. There are jumps, dives, squeals. He leaps up like a fish out of water, twisting his body in mid-air landing easily on all fours. The serene exterior displayed inside the shelter is wholly replaced by a boisterous, excited, jumping bean full of zest for life. He pushes his front paws against my legs and chest as if we are two children on a playground and he is double-dog (!) daring me. “Play, come on PLAY!” he demands. While I can’t help but feel a little tricked by Temoto I also can’t help but be swept away by his joyous, youthful energy and we commence a rousing game of fetch in no time. Later on, when some delicious jerky appears on the scene, I learn that Temoto has been very well trained in his short life. “Sit,” “stay,” and “come” are all firmly in this boy’s vocabulary and each one is rewarded with a lip-smacking snack. I run my hand along his shiny, ebony coat. This boy has been well cared for. My delicious jerky is not his first high-quality snack and it will not be his last. While I believe Temoto, as with any very young pup, certainly enjoys pulling the wool over his person’s eyes, I also feel he longs for the discipline and training his former owner seems to have begun but not yet finished. A young boy in the school yard, Temoto is wide-eyed and electric, full of light and promise. He needs only his teacher. Temoto, “at home,” waits to fulfill his destiny at Manhattan’s ACC.
03/18/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Temoto pulls a bit on the leash. He was excited but very interested in interacting with handler during assessment – jumped up, mouthy (light). He was excited during some of the handling items, but had soft body language. Temoto was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. He mouthed without applying pressure during the paw item. Temoto took the toy with a soft body language. Temoto appears to be a high-energy dog that will likely do best with an adopter prepared to provide mental and physical stimulation and appropriate outlets for his energy. The behavior department feels that he can go to an experience home. Look: 3. Dog jumps on the Assessor, consistently rubs his shoulder on the Assessor, and will not allow Assessor to conduct the assessment. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. His body is soft, likely panting, may jump up between attempts to lick Assessor. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog gently places his open mouth over the Assessor’s hand without applying pressure. Squeeze 2: 2. Dog gently places his open mouth over the Assessor’s hand without applying pressure. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Playgroup Notes: When off leash with other dogs, Temoto engages in running chase play with males and females.
03/17/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Temoto is social and playful, engaging in rough, running play with males and females. He mounts dogs of both sexes but tends to direct his mounting solely at males–likely in a manor that is play. He often mimics playstyles, ie vocal and mouthy with dogs that solicit as such, but soft and polite with dogs who are not as playful. His owner did not report any information on any dog-to-dog interactions, so any in-home behaviors with other dogs are unknown. The behavior department feels that Temoto could go to a home with another playful dog. When off leash with other dogs, Temoto engages in running chase play with males and females. 3/22 update: Temoto engages in rough play with other dogs. 3/23 update: Temoto is playful with males and females. He becomes vocal and mounts during play. 3/24 update: Temoto continues to exhibit these behaviors when off leash with other dogs.
