06/22/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: True love doesn’t always arrive gift-wrapped in pristine packaging. Sometimes you have to look past a few lumps, bumps and scars to see the precious diamond shining within. And believe me, Tazz is an absolute treasure. He’s easy-going and affectionate, relaxed with both people and dogs and so grateful for the smallest tidbit of food or the lightest touch of a caressing hand. He’s not emaciated, but you can tell that this sweet boy has been deprived of care for a while now. His sight and hind legs may be a bit weak, but if you think that’s going to stop him living life to the full, then you don’t know Tazz! Exploring the yard, taking treats with a kiss, nuzzling his head against my hand like a cat, skittering down the stairs or sniffing every tree he can find, Tazz does it all with a wag in his tail and a happy song in his heart. He walks well on leash, seems to be house trained and passes strangers of all varieties with ease. Life is a gift, and Tazz reminds me of this with every minute we spend together. When it’s finally time to return to his den, he pouts a little at the door, then curls up like a baby on his comforter, and slowly falls into a deep and peaceful sleep. Dogs don’t come any more deserving or more appealing than Tazz, and to meet him once is to remember him forever. He’s a one-in-a-million find, a priceless gem hiding in plain sight, a dog, a pet, a miracle. Will today be the day Tazz finds his own true love?
06/22/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Tazz came into our center after a member of the public called the police to report a stray dog eating out of the garbage. He walked well on leash for his relief walk, no pulling. Tazz pulled out of assessor’s hands during all three Look attempts. He shoulder rubbed during positioning for Sensitivity item, but once positioned he leaned in slightly, lip lick, accepted the touch. Tazz was a bit distracted during Tag game, unresponsive to each pass. He approached the assessor at end of game. Tazz pulled his paw back on both Squeeze attempts, sniffed assessor’s hand. He showed minimal interest in Toy, sniffing it each time it was presented but relinquished it easily. When greeting other dogs through the fence, he displays ears up, loose body otherwise, sniffs, walks away. The Behavior Team feels Tazz would do well with an Average adopter. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 2. Dog shoulder rubs during positioning, then slightly leans into assessor, accepts touch, lip lick. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, a bit distracted Squeeze 1 / 2: 2. Dog pulls back paw, sniffs hand Toy: 1. Minimal interest in Toy, sniffs each time presented, relinquishes easily Dog-dog: When greeting other dogs through the fence, he displays ears up, loose body otherwise, sniffs, walks away.
06/21/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When greeting both a male and a female through a barrier Tazz maintains a relaxed body posture, ears up and wagging tail. He stands sniffing for a few seconds then walks away. Due to ataxia of his hind limbs he is not introduced off-leash. Tazz arrived at the care center as a stray, so any in-home behaviors with other dogs are unknown. Although he does appear interested interacting, his off-leash behaviors are unknown, so the behavior department recommends a pre-adoption interaction before introducing him to any resident dogs.
