05/29/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
CANINE BEHAVIOR EVALUATION for Taz A1113194 KNOWN HISTORY: None 05/25/17 Intact female, owner surrender SAFER ASSESSMENT: 05/29/17 Summary: Taz has allowed minimal handling during her stay at the care centers, any attempts to interact may result in threat displays; lunging, snapping and growling. Because Taz shows little tolerance to novel stimuli and has been observed to escalate, out of concern for her stress level and safety of staff, a SAFER assessment will not be performed. Because there is little information provided in addition to being unable to safely handle Taz in the care center, we cannot be certain of her behavior in a future home environment and recommend safe and appropriate management. INTAKE BEHAVIOR 05/25/17 Upon intake, Taz was lunging, growling and air-snapping at passing staff. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 05/26/17 During her initial medical examination, Taz was unable to be handled due to behavior. ENERGY LEVEL: Taz displays a low energy level in the care center due to her fear and avoidance, we cannot be certain of how her behavior in a home environment. RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13) _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Due to the warning and distance-increasing behaviors shown in the care center, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide force free behavior modification to address the underlying anxiety. Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Taz has been observed to displays appropriate warning signals when uncomfortable, so this is an established behavior that she offers when she feels threatened. Taz needs careful behavior modification and management before re-assessing behavior. We recommend only force-free, reward-based training methods for Taz as more aversive techniques are likely to increase fear and increase the risk of aggression.
