A volunteer writes: Gorgeous and young Taz (together with housemate Keebler) is with us as his family lost its home…He has been like Keebler beautifully cared for. He was quite understandably anxious when he came in to the care center but walks with staff and volunteers well. TAZ is a very strong dog who pulls mightily on the leash. He is very house trained, though, sits beautifully on command and even gives paw… He aims toward other dogs but it seems that being so young and enthusiastic, he would like to play. He was quite interactive with another dog, a female, he was playing with in the yard. An amazing and happy chase!!! Taz, if adopted, needs an active owner, things to do and maybe the company of another playful and friendly 4 legged friend. He is quite sociable and affectionate and would make an awesome forever best friend. Come and meet him soon at the Manhattan Care Center!!!
03/05/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 3/2/17 Neutered, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 3/5/17 Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 3. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Jumps up, grabs leash repeatedly, mouths assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Summary: Taz displayed a high level of energy and movement on his assessment. He jumped up and mouthed the assessor at times, especially during look and tag. He was social throughout. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: Taz stiffens, growls, then lunges at the gate when greeting the helper dog. He is muzzled for an off-leash interaction. Taz is preoccupied with the presence of the muzzle, though at times does become stiff when approached by the female greeter. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 3/2/17 During his initial medical exam, Taz allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Taz so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. He jumped up on the assessor moderately during his assessment, apparently in an attempt to solicit attention. He is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No young children (under 5): Due to the level of jumping and mouthing Taz displayed on his assessment, we recommend a home without young children. Older, dog savvy children should have an in depth interaction prior to adoption. Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control: It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. _X_Mouthiness/Poor bite inhibition: Taz has shown some mouthiness in the care center. Little pressure is applied, but this is a behavior that should be extinguished through training alternate behaviors and lack of reward (ex. walking away whenever Taz’s teeth make contact with skin _X_On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Taz has growled and lunged at dog while on leash. We recommend the use of positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach Taz a “Look” cue, to focus on the person walking him rather than on his surroundings, when passing other dogs. _X_Leash-biting
