A volunteer writes: I am glad to have spent quite a bit of time with Taylor. Taylor is a great and calm walker. I could wrap her leash around just my little finger (not recommended). She does her business on the way and leaves alone birds, squirrels as well as other pooches. She got a bit restless when I tethered her for pictures. How can I capture her beauty? I guess, you will just have to meet her in person. Taylor comes when called, wagging her tail. She seems happy to see other people and even dogs nearing our pen. She never really sat for me or played ball or with a toy but by the end of our session together, she was leaning on me and demanding butt scratches insistently. There was a smile, an open mouth and bright eyes but I was too slow to catch it with my lens. She ended up on the bench, kissing me. We were pals. Time and patience are important to get the most of a relationship. It really pays off. Beautiful Taylor is waiting for you at the Manhattan Care Center. Another volunteer writes: Up front and welcoming in her kennel, Miss Taylor is letting me know a walk would be simply grand. Leashed easily, she hops down from her kennel and out we go. With a happily wagging tail, Taylor play bows to me as we start our walk, and I’m in love. Her leash manners are lovely, and she loves to cuddle and be close. When I tether her in the park, she loved watching the kids play ball and people walking by, and maneuvering herself so that some part of her was always touching me. Of course, that resulted in constant leash entanglements, but she’s a great sport about being handled all over to untangle her. In a backyard pen she’s still all about cuddles, tail wags and more play bows, and in the tag portion of her behavior assessment she joined in, loving the game!! She’s definitely a people dog, so happy to be in the company of a friend, ready to do whatever it is you want to do as long as there’s some cuddling.
05/29/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 5/26/17 Unaltered Female, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 5/28/17 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, closed mouth. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Toy: 1. Minimal interest, dog sniffs toy. Summary: Taylor displayed no concerning behavior on her assesment. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Proximity Sensitive: These dogs have had a poor history of social experience with other dogs or could be extremely fearful in the shelter environment. They are socially shy and may exhibit fearful body posturing, defensive posturing, or physically avoid/ignore other dogs. PLAYGROUP: Taylor has appeared largely uncomfortable interacting with dogs in the care center, though at times has opened up and approached select, calm dogs. The behavior department recommends that Taylor be allowed to interact at her own pace with respectful dogs, on a one on one basis. Interactions should always be supervised. INTAKE BEHAVIOR MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 5/27/17 During her initial medical exam, Taylor was tense. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Taylor so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: Average (suitable for an adopter with an average amount of dog experience) _X_Recommend no dog parks: Taylor would benefit from being allowed to interact with dogs at her own pace, and should meet them on a one on one basis.
