04/07/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
04/07/17 09:59 Tarin is a 3 year old black and white american pitbull terrier who arrived as a stray surrender. Upon intake Tarin was shy for introduction with a very still body and was resitant ot walking but not defensive. After a short time Tarin appeared more relaxed and sniffed leash holders leg and was willing to walk on but was low to the ground for this. Counselor was able to scan for microchip (negative) and photograph but did not collar.
04/13/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Tarin is on the shy and timid side, but my goodness, is she adorable and sweet! She is compact, wears a dashing black coat, and her face reminds me of a little baby seal. She LOVES treats (like in a foot-long strand of drool hanging from her mouth kind of way), knows “sit” and seems to have housetraining. She is unsure, but has bouts of being very wiggly and affection-seeking; she channels a puppy when she wags her whole back end, and will briefly hang out in my lap. She likes to chase after tennis balls (but hasn’t followed through with actually playing fetch with me yet) and seems to like other dogs (she has done very well in our playgroups, but can get overwhelmed and nervous if things get too rowdy!). Tarin is looking for someone that will give her time to come out of her shell and will give lots of love in return…please come see her at Brooklyn ACC!
04/18/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 04/07/17 Intact female, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 04/11/17 Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 2. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach). He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Dog may lick hand. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Dog may lick hand. Toy: 1. No interest Summary: Tarin was initially timid though readily warmed up, becoming loose and displaying social behavior. She displayed no concern. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Tarin was initially nervous but was able to solicit and engage in gentle play with playful dogs. She becomes overwhelmed with higher energy players, and keeps to herself with calm dogs. Tarin was surrendered as a stray so her past behavior around dogs is unknown. The Behavior Department recommends that Tarin be placed with resident dogs that match her calm sociability. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 04/11/17 During her initial medical examination, Tarin appeared fearful; tucked tail, trembling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Tarin so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she is a young, enthusiastic, dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (Suitable for an adopter with a previous amount of dog experience) _X_No young children Potential challenges: _X_Fearful: Tarin is timid with new people. She manages her stress well and has not escalated or shown any aggression, but she does need time to warm up to new people. She does best with a slow approach, and should be permitted to greet new people at her own pace and to initiate interaction (rather than being approached and pet immediately by a new person) so she has time to adjust and become comfortable before he is handled. She should be spoken to softly and gently.
04/08/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Tarin was initially nervous but was able to solicit and engage in gentle play with playful dogs. She becomes overwhelmed with higher energy players, and keeps to herself with calm dogs. Tarin was surrendered as a stray so her past behavior around dogs is unknown. The Behavior Department recommends that Tarin be placed with resident dogs that match her calm sociability. 4/8: Tarin is nervous, greeting the novel male dog with a lowered body. She spends her time exploring the pen, occasionally checking in on the other dog. 4/9: Tarin greets another female dog and solicits gentle play with wiggles and bounces. She becomes nervous- tucking her body- when an assertive female approaches and stiffens her posture in front of Tarin. 4/10: Tarin was utilized as a social greeter dog today. She was tolerant of a variety of temperaments, but became overwhelmed with high energy, rowdy play- hiding behind handlers. She engages in brief bouts of gentle play with both male and female dogs. 4/11: Tarin displays soft body language and mostly keeps to herself in a group of calm male and female dogs.
