A volunteer writes: Adopted from us a short while ago and returned as Tanner’s puppy playfulness was too much for the 15 year old resident Chihuahua, Tanner is all love, playfulness and wiggles. She loves other dogs and romps exuberantly in group. We’re told that she doesn’t guard her stuff, although she would take the older dogs toys, enjoys baths, likes her food mixed with raw eggs, and although we are told she’s not housetrained, she went potty as soon as we were out the door. She’s a puppy so may need some positive reinforcement training and more regular walks. Tanner is so sweet and friendly, her tail never stops wagging, her leash manners are good, she sits for treats and takes them gently. Wanting to meet every dog we passed on our walk she’d probably love a home with an equally playful dog. Off leash tanner loved chasing a tennis ball, but was reluctant to pick it up when it got too full of snow. She was a joy to watch as she tried to figure it all out pawing at it to remove the snow. So cute! Lively puppies aren’t for everyone – they need exercise, structure, love and, of course, an outlet for their energy. If you’re a puppy person ready to provide everything that this adorable youngster needs,
she’s hoping to meet you today.
PROFILE :
Basic Information:
Tanner is a 10 month old spayed Pitbull terrier. She was adopted and returned to the shelter. She was surrendered to us because she played too exuberantly with an elderly Chihuahua in the house.
Socialization:
Around strangers, she is very outgoing. She was gentle when she played with her previous owner. She lived with a 15 years old Chihuahua whom she played exuberantly with. Tanner claim ownership over the Chihuahua’s toys. The owner claimed she never showed aggression towards the other dog but she would not play gently.
Behavior:
She allowed the owner to touch food bowl, treats and toys while she used them. She enjoyed baths and allowed her ears cleaned. She was always friendly when her nails were being trimmed or when an unfamiliar approached the house or family member.
For a new family to know:
She was described to us as a very playful, friendly and affectionate dog. Her activity level is very high. Her favorite activity was to stare out the window. At home she tended to follow the previous owner around to be in the same room. She could also be found lounging in the kitchen her favorite spot. Her favorite toys were balls. Her favorite game to play was tug and fetch. She was kept mostly indoors and slept in the bed. She was fed dog food mixed with raw eggs otherwise she would not eat. She was not house trained and she would have accidents daily. She would destroy household items when left alone. She knew a handful of commands like sit, come and her name. She would pull very hard on leash.
Behavior during intake:
She tolerated all handling during intake. She had a loose body and wagging tail. I was able to collar and no signs of aggressions were display.

3/10 – 3/11: Tanner engages in mouthy, bouncy play with playful male.
IN-SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:
When at an adoption event, Tanner showed concerning resource guarding behaviors towards another dog passing by when that dog attempted to take the bone/toy in her possession (i.e. lunged, snarled, snapped).
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:
During her initial medical exam Tanner allowed handling
ENERGY LEVEL:
Her previous owner describes Tanner as an energetic, enthusiastic dog, which matches what we have seen in the care center. Tanner will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below)
Potential challenges:
_X_House soiling: Tanner is reported to have frequent accidents in the house, and appears not to have been housetrained in the past. She will need guidance and consistency to learn to eliminate outside. We recommend crate training (the crate must be made positive and never used as a punishment), frequent walks, rewards for eliminating outside (treats, toys, games, praise), consistent feeding schedule, and careful monitoring when inside. Accidents should never e punished as it can damage the human-dog relationship and is likely to make the problem worse.
_X_Resource guarding: See “IN-SHELTER OBSERVATIONS”, appropriate management should be exercised around other dogs.
_X_Destructive behavior: Tanner is reported to show destructive behavior in the home. We are unaware of what, if any, attempts were made to remedy this behavior but we suggest to future adopters that Tanner will need to be provided with physical and mental stimulation and with a variety of appropriate and engaging chew toys so she can engage in necessary chewing behavior without damage to human objects. She may benefit from continued crate training when home alone to decrease availability to household items without supervision.
_X_Basic manners: Tanner reportedly pulls very hard on leash. She would benefit from being walked on a front clip harness or head halter, and that she is trained using positive reinforcement, reward based training not to pull on leash. She may benefit from basic puppy classes to learn proper leash manners.

A volunteer writes:
Redd is a most adorable puppy girl, only 8 months of age. Made of marble cake and vanilla, she is as sweet as can be, jumping on my lap and flooding me with kisses as soon as I sit on a bench after our walk . Although she is in no ways “hyper “, Redd is lively , loves to run with her peers(she offers play bows, gives paw slaps..)and play with toys and balls that she does not guard. She likes treats that she takes politely from my hand and will even sit for them. She is really enjoying herself with anything she does. Redd is a great walker and even does her business on the way although we do not guarantee perfect house training skills at her age.. Redd has been beautifully cared for. She has a healthy personality in a healthy body…She is very sociable, friendly, super affectionate without being overwhelming and is one pretty little girl… Come and meet Redd at the Manhattan Care Center and make her your forever best friend. She is a very special and precious gem.
