A volunteer writes: I know it’s not nice to play favorites, but I have one and I can’t help it. Don’t tell the other dogs, because they’re all great too, but Dakota takes the cake. And it seems like she knows that she’s the apple of my eye, as she’s always eagerly waiting for me to take her out. She often props herself on the bars of her kennel, peering over the wall, amber eyes locking in soft contact shiny with anticipation of some time in the yard. Perhaps she remembers me. We have a little bit of a history. I met her last fall, when she was a bit younger, smaller even and not quite out of her shell just yet. She was sweet, and puppy-like, and quickly adopted, only to be returned again last month for lack of time to care for her. So you can imagine my disappointment to see her back. But to my surprise, Dakota is not the shy, reserved puppy that she once was. A bit taller, lankier and thinner, but with the same glistening brindle coat, Dakota is a social butterfly. Per her previous owner, and my own experience, Dakota is very outgoing. She’s friendly to everyone she meets, often greeting staff and other volunteers, even fellow dogs, with a tail wag and even a hug. In her former home, she was often at doggy day care and got along with all breeds and sizes of dogs fetchingly. It’s hard to pinpoint just why she’s my favorite, whether it’s her being meticulously housetrained, her shining personality, her readiness to give lots of kisses, her preference for showers rather than baths, or her affection for people. But if I had to narrow it down, it’s what a pleasure she is to watch in the yard. Her love for toys is profound. It seems she can spot one from a mile away, or if you have one in your bag she has a second sense and knows it’s there. She loves to play fetch, chasing after the ball and retrieving it like a pro. She will enthusiastically bring me a rope toy, begging for me to play tug, winning nearly every time. And if I bring her a plush toy, she will prance about the yard with it, running on the playground equipment proudly showing it off to passersby. While I always look forward to my time with Dakota, I’d be much happier knowing she’s with a family who’s ready to take her on hikes and play with her in the park to burn of some of her teenage steam. Ask to meet her today.
