Tabitha
Hello, my name is Tabitha. My animal id is #12152. I am a desexed female brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years old.
I came into the shelter as a aco impound on 09-Nov-2017, with the surrender reason stated as person health – going into care facility.
Tabitha is at risk due to behavior (New Hope Only determination). She is extremely uncomfortable with touch and unfamiliar surroundings. She should go to an adult only home. There are no known medical concerns for her at this time.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: NEW HOPE ONLY
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to how uncomfortable Tabitha is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. Place with a New Hope partner: Tabitha has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding; Tabitha is reported to tense, growl, and bark when her food bowl is touched. We recommend that Tabitha be left along while eating, and that food guarding behavior modification steps (available at ASPCApro.org) be utilized if this behavior is problematic in his future home. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Tabitha’s mouth, and any time something is removed she should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. She should be taught the “drop” cue and trade-up games. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Tabitha is reported to growl, bark, and lunge at people when her owner is not present. In the care center, she has displayed this behavior when approached and has not been able to be safely handled. Guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is recommended to assess behavior after decompression in a new home environment. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing or exposing Tabitha to new and unfamiliar situations.
