07/05/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Syllable — a unique name for a most special lady! She and a little Yorkie were found tied up to a veterinary hospital in Far Rockaway — both looking a bit worse for wear. Her coat might be shabby, but Syllable is completely radiant! She is very friendly and eager to connect with people. She pulls with no regard for the well being of her own neck at first, but after she’s relieved herself (she seems very housebroken) and gotten some pent up energy out, she walks beautifully on leash. She usually responds to “sit,” but sometimes opts to stand up and pirouette for treats instead. She has a wonderful smile and when she hears an interesting noise makes the most precious quizzical face. When I have her off leash in the yard she is initially very playful and excited, but after a few minutes lays down (sometimes between my legs) and does some sunning. Off leash or on, Syllable is consistently very, very affectionate. Petting sends her into a frenzy of scratching along with her back leg or propping her paws on me and showering me with kisses, but ultimately leads to Syllable going belly up! She loves belly rubs, and when I stop she bats her front paw at me to ask why. Being a middle-aged pitbull makes Syllable an underdog of sorts, but I suspect whoever takes a chance on her will find themselves with a silly, charming, incredibly sweet, and devoutly loving best friend! Syllable would be so happy to meet you at Brooklyn ACC!
07/01/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Syllable came in as a stray, so her past behaviors in a home are unknown. Syllable had loose body posture, affectionate and allowed all handling upon intake. During her relief walk Syllable pulls strongly on the leash. During SAFER Syllable was social towards the assessor, allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Syllable was distracted during the tag interaction but not fearful, and during the resources portion of the assessment Syllable was easy to handle when engaged with the items. When attempting her dog to dog interaction Syllables displays some potentially selective with a female when greeting and is stiff bodied. When greeting a male, she is loosed bodied. Due to some minor concerns with her dog to dog, the behavior department feels she can be suitable for an experience adopter. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (need coaxing to approach.) She is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1 & 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed. Food: 2. Dog follows the dish with her tail down, body likely a bit stiff. Dog lifts head after a bit of pressure from hand to cheek. Toy: 1. Minimal interest in toy, dog smells, then turns away. Rawhide: 1. Minimal interest in rawhide, dog smells, then turns away. Dog-to-dog: When off leash with other dogs , Syllables displays some potentially selective with a female when greeting and is stiff bodied. When greeting a male, she is loosed bodied. She continues to show some anxious behavior in the yard.
