07/20/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: How appropriately named is Sweety Belle? With a chocolate coat, a beautiful (belle) face, and a spirit as delightful (and addictive) as any saccharine treat, I can’t imagine a better fit. On first meeting Sweety I smile immediately and believe I actually say “adorable” aloud. At 1 year-old and just 36 lbs, Sweety is a nymph who hops with excitement at every step of our walk and whose eyes swell at every bustling city sight and sound. Free in a pen I discover miss Belle’s TRUE love, and that’s toys. As I sprinkle them about she darts and dashes after each one and I imagine her thought bubble to be, “but how do I play with them ALL?!!” She eventually resigns herself to one at a time and soon begins to show Mr. Parrot who’s boss. I chuckle and turn away for a moment (just one moment!) and when I turn back, something has changed. While Mr. Parrot remains, albeit a bit bruised, another…has gone missing. In short order I deduce yes, it is Sir Orange Fuzzball. Yes Sir OF has gone missing and, to fast forward quite a bit, it turns out that our Ms. Belle devoured him. But fear not! He was small and she was fine though a good note to self and any others who encounter this sprite, when everything is as exciting and delicious as it is to Sweety, “take a bite out of life” and be quite literal. Sweet, chocolate Sweety, the nymph, the sprite, the beautiful girl is waiting in adoptions at Manhattan’s ACC.
07/17/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Sweety Belle came into our center as an owner surrender. It is reported she lived in a household with children ages 8 to 17, relaxed and playful. Behavior around cats is unknown. Sweety Belle is reportedly not bothered if anyone touches her Food, Toys, Treats. It is reported she is housebroken to use the bathroom outside on the grass, well behaved when left home alone. Owner reports Sweety Belle knows the cues ‘sit’ and ‘put it down’. During intake, Sweety Belle was relaxed and allowed all handling. She pulled on leash for her relief walk, jumped up on handler, mouthing. Sweety Belle allowed her head to be cupped in assessor’s hands during Look item, body soft, tail wag. She leaned into assessor during Sensitivity item, mouths assessor’s hand without pressure. Sweety Belle was distracted and unresponsive during Tag game, high energy running. She whined during positioning for Squeeze item, mouthing assessor’s hand with some applied pressure. Sweety Belle moved her body away quickly during paw Squeeze, so remaining item was conducted using Flank. She mouthed assessor’s hand during both Flank Squeezes. Sweety Belle enthusiastically played with Toy, kept a firm grip with loose body. Sweety Belle played rough and rowdy with other dogs. The Behavior Team feels Sweety Belle would do best with an Experienced adopter that does not have very young children. She will benefit from obedience classes to learn leash manners, focus, as well as no mouthing. Sweety Belle would do best with daily mental and physical stimulation in the forms of daily walks, runs, exercise, play, as well as durable toys such as kongs and nylabones to positively direct her energy. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, runs enthusiastically Squeeze 1: 3. Dog is soft in body and eye, and moves his legs/body so that the Assessor is unable to hold the paw Flank squeeze 1 / 2: 2. Dog gently places his open mouth over the Assessor’s hand, applies light pressure Toy 1: 1. Dog plays enthusiastically, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy.
