03/14/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Sweetie Bell is a tiny little lady with the cutest pink spot on her nose. She is a little shy, but super sweet and opens up to be very playful. She props her paws on her cage door and is very wiggly in her cage, but outside she is much more overwhelmed. She needs some coaxing to venture far beyond the parking lot, and when a garbage truck passed us on the street Sweetie Bell made it clear that it was time to head for the hills! Not surprisingly, her previous owner reports that she is afraid of loud noises and tries to hide. After she recovered from our garbage truck encounter we hung out in the yard and she acted much more like a puppy while checking out the dog in the adjacent pen. She is reported to be housetrained, have a medium activity level, and to be well behaved when left alone. Sweetie Bell would like a quiet home in the country in a place where thunderstorms don’t exist, but I think even more she’d LOVE a patient family that can help her bravely cope with whatever noises come her way! She’d love to meet you at Brooklyn ACC.
03/16/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Sweetie Bell becomes assertive and persistently attempts to mount by throwing her body onto the flank side of the helper dogs. Due to her behavior in playgroup, the Behavior Department feels that Sweetie Bell should live with “experienced” adopters. Please see her playgroup notes for details. SAFER 3/11: Sweetie Bell previously lived with 1 adult. The owner stated around strangers Sweetie Bell is shy for a few minutes and plays exuberantly with adults. The owner mentioned Sweetie Bell is nervous and tries to hide when she hear loud noises. The owner describes Sweetie Bell as friendly, affectionate, playful, shy, confident, mellow, excitable and fearful. It was reported by the owner sweetie bell is house trained, has a medium activity level and well behaved when home alone in the home or yard. At intake it was reported Sweetie bell was nervous but enjoyed being pet, she allowed all handling. During SAFER Sweetie Bell came into the assessment room nervous but friendly, she was friendly and social towards the assessor with a slow approach. She allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Sweetie Bell was fearful with her body low during the tag interaction, and during the resources portion of the assessment Sweetie Bell was easy to handle when engaged with the item. Sweetie Bell has been showing fearful behavior. We cannot be certain if behavior may be suppressed as a result of the shelter environment. Please note that behavior may change when Sweetie bell is more comfortable and settled in a home environment. In addition, we recommend that introductions are done slowly, and Sweetie Bell be given the opportunity to interact at her own pace. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her body posture is fearful; her tail is low and not moving. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is between her legs, body a bit tense, trembles and mouth closed. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body low and a bit fearful. Squeeze 1 & 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Toy: 1. No interest. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Sweetie Bell approaches the gate nervously with a tucked tail and slightly trembling body. Once in pen however, she becomes assertive and persistently attempts to mount on the flank side of the helper dog by throwing her body on to him. She responds to interruptions but continues the behavior immediately.
03/10/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off leash with other dogs, Sweetie Bell approaches the gate nervously with a tucked tail and slightly trembling body. Once in pen however, she becomes assertive and persistently attempts to mount on the flank side of the helper dog by throwing her body on to him. She responds to interruptions but continues the behavior immediately. Due to her behavior in playgroup, the Behavior Department feels that Sweetie Bell would be most suited to living in a home with no other dogs. 3/15 update: Sweetie Bell rushes the gate with a tense, forward stance. She paces back and forth lunging onto the fence. Due to her intensity and stiff body language she is muzzled. Once inside the pen she is unfortunately fixated on the muzzle but does look up at the helper dog on several occasions and freezes. She does not attempt to greet at all, instead she launches herself onto the flank side of the helper dog. Due to her intense and assertive behavior, the interaction is ended.
