Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 1. Minimal interest, dog sniffs toy. Summary: Swan displayed no concerning behaviors on his assessment. PLAYGROUP: Due to arriving as a stray, Swan’s history around dogs is unknown. Swan has displayed concerning levels of reactivity to other dogs on leash, reported to growl and lunge toward them in passing. He has been tolerant during off leash, slow introductions to female dogs, but displays minimal interest in actively socializing. The behavior department feels Swan may be most comfortable as the only resident dog. However, a home with a single, respectful female dog may be considered pending in-depth consultation. INTAKE BEHAVIOR: Upon intake, Swan was tense and shy. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 9/6/17 During his initial medical exam, Swan was a bit tense but allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Swan so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. In the care center, he displays a medium level of activity. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) Potential challenges: _X_On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: At the care center, Swan has been observed to react to other dogs on leash, lunging towards them, barking and growling. Swan may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach him to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior.
