06/09/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
06/09/17 13:37 Basic information: Sunshine is a 11 month old female dog. She is short with tall pointy ears with brown spots on white fur. She was bred in her previous owner’s home but surrendered because they have too many pets. She has never been to a vet but has no injuries or health problems. Socialization: Around strangers, Sunshine is shy for a few minutes. She lived with children ages 8-13. She was relaxed, playful and exuberant at play. When she played with adults she was exuberant. She lived with 5 dogs and was relaxed, playful and very rough at play. She also lived with 2, 3 year old, neutered cats for 8 months. She was said to be aggressive. She would bark, growl, chase and bite (never drew blood). Behavior: Sunshine has bitten an animal before but has not drawn blood in the past 10 days. She is said to be afraid of the rain and will not go outside, she is not bothered by storms or fireworks. If her food bowl was touched while eating, she would pause and look up with relaxed body. She is friendly if a treat or toy is taken from her. She is also friendly when taken off furniture. She isn’t bothered if her paws are touched. She is afraid of the bath and tries to run away. She enjoys having her coat brushed. If an unfamiliar person approached the home she barked, if they came in she hid under a table. If her previous owners were approached by an unfamiliar person she was friendly. For A New Family to Know: Sunshine is described as friendly, affectionate, playful, shy, with a very high activity level. The two things her previous owners liked most about her were; she’s energetic and affectionate. When her previous owners were home she would tend to follow them around. She likes to play with stuffed, squeaky and rope toys. She was kept mostly indoors and at night she slept in a crate. She ate dry Beneful. She is mostly housed trained but has accidents 2x daily if not taken out on time. When left alone indoors she destroys household items, in the yard she is well behaved. She was kept in her crate for 7 hours daily. For exercise she played in her yard 4 hours daily. Behavior during intake: Sunshine originally would greet with wagging tail and sniff me but then back away and pull away from owner. She did not walk on leash. She allowed me to pet her and collar her. After her owners left she came and smelled me again with wagging tail and laid her head on my lap. She allowed me to pick her up, take pictures.
06/22/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: 11-month old Sunshine was left into our care as her owners were not able to have so many pets in the house anymore. She bred at home and lived happily with many kids, as well as five other dogs. We are told that Sunshine was not too fond of cats, is a very affectionate little gal, quite energetic and super playful like a puppy should be. Sunshine, although a little on the thin side, is very cute and adorable. Her underbite and round forehead let us know that she is part Boxer. She walks very nicely on the leash, sometimes trying to mouth it, but she is easily distracted with a treat or a toy. Her former owners say that she was mostly house trained, but she probably will need fine tuning in that department. Sunshine is excited seeing other dogs. Given a chance to rest, she immediately climbs on the lap of her caretaker for comfort and love. Sunshine is still a puppy and of course, will need training, time and patience (sprinkled with lots of love) to lead her to perfect doghood. If you are up to the task and if you love puppies, here is Sunshine for you, a little girl waiting for her new owners at the Manhattan Care Center. Another volunteer writes: I met Sunshine in her playgroup today and fell head over heels in love. Playful with other dogs, snuggly with her person, she gives herself a ‘time out’ when she needs a break, does a few yoga poses, flashes a big, sweet smile as she chills out and then resumes play. Rolling over on her back as she plays, her petite frame and wagging tail spells good will to all. She’s absolutely delicious, waiting for her new person or family to find her. You’ll fall in love the moment you meet her. Guaranteed! Another volunteer writes: Little Sunshine is waiting for her place in the sun at your side, or better yet, on your lap. She is a very shy babe who stays at the back of her kennel but will come forward as one coaxes her gently. Then only, Sunshine abandons herself totally in your arms. Timid dogs are not crowd pleasers…even if they are as attractive as Sunshine. She was no wallflower in her house as we were told. So it is a matter of getting her to a home sweet home and she will be again the happy puppy she was.

PLAYGROUP: Sunshine engages playful with dogs in the care center when given time to warm up. The behavior department recommends slow introductions to resident dogs in the home. The previous owner describes her as playful around the other dogs in the home, though with a history of biting over resources. It is recommended that Sunshine be fed separately from other dogs in the home, and that toy time be kept separate as well. INTAKE BEHAVIOR: 6/8/17 Upon intake, Sunshine would not walk on leash but allowed handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 6/10/17 During her initial medical exam, Sunshine allowed handling.
ENERGY LEVEL: Sunshine’s previous owner described her as having a very high level of activity. She is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No young children (under 5): Due to the behavior seen in the care center, we feel that Sunshine may be intimidated by young children. She needs a slow approach and time to warm up. _X_No cats: Sunshine’s previous owner reported that she chases, growls at, and bites cats so we recommend a home without cats. Potential challenges: _X Destructive behavior: Sunshine is reported to show destructive behavior in the home, such as chewing on furniture. We suggest to future adopters that Sunshine will need to be provided with physical and mental stimulation and with a variety of appropriate and engaging chew toys so she can engage in necessary chewing behavior without damage to objects. _X_Fearful: Sunshine is a bit fearful at the care center. It is important to always go slow and give Sunshine the option to walk away from any social interaction. Sunshine should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Sunshine’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Sunshine would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to her new surroundings.
