04/27/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Sunday came to us as a stray so we have no behavior information other than what has been observed while in the shelter environment. Sunday can be seen in his kennel with very anxious behavior running back and forth between two kennels while whining. He seems to have loose body language when being removed from the kennel and pulls a bit on the leash during his walk. He was excited when entering the behavior and did seem a bit interested in interacting with the assessor. Sunday allowed the assessor to conduct all tactile assessment items without displaying any signs of aggression. He became uncomfortable during the first paw squeeze head flipping toward the assessor’s hand with stiff body language. The flank was conducted next where Sunday was a bit tense during the first flank attempt, but did not respond toward the second. Sunday took the toy away with stiff body language when the assessor attempted to take it with the assess-a-hand. When attempting to put Sunday back into his kennel he displayed very concerning behavior, and once almost inside he immediately turned right out of it. He began to jump and started to quarrel with another dog across from him. As the assessor attempted to control him he directed his attention toward the assessor trying to bite the leash. Once in the kennel Sunday bit the leash and did not let go until he broke it. Due to this behavior and Sunday’s very quick state of arousal we recommend Sunday go to a new partner that can provide the proper outlets for his energy. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1: 3. Dog head flips while pulling back paw. Body a bit tense. Flank squeeze 1: 2. Dog does not respond at all. Body a bit tense. Flank squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all. Toy 1: 3. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. His body is stiff.
04/26/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Sunday was difficult to leash in his kennel due to him jumping, clawing and rushing the door. When off leash with other dogs Sunday is anxious and paces the pen before greeting the other dog at the gate with a stiff body and hard barks. Sunday energy and anxiety was increasing when all the stimulus, the other dog and handlers, moved around. The dogs were not introduced due to Sunday’s behavior and the fact that our helper dog may not respond well to his behavior. All stimuli were removed to give Sunday a chance to deescalate.
