PLAYGROUP: According to Sugar’s previous owner, Sugar was relaxed around the other resident dog, but during play she becomes over-aroused and begins to hard bark and growl. When off leash at the Care Center, Sugar greets at the fence with a stiff posture, low growls and hard stare. Due to this body language she is muzzled before an off-leash introduction is attempted. Once she is allowed into the pen, her body remains stiff and still but she does allow the helper dog to sniff her. The session is ended when she becomes occupied with the muzzle. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR 9/22/2017 During her initial medical exam, Sugar was tense/tail tucked but easy to handle. ENERGY LEVEL: Her owner describes Sugar as having a high level of activity which matches what we have seen in the care center. Sugar initially presents as timid but once warmed up is she is social w/handler
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially in the behaviors outlined below) _X_No young children (under 5)- Owner reports Sugar may growl if food bowl is touched. We feel young children may not know to respect this warning. Older dog savvy children may be considered if the adults feel confident that Sugar can be left alone while eating so she does not need to escalate from a growl.. Potential challenges: _X_Resource guarding- Owner reports Sugar may growl if her food bowl is touched. We recommend that Sugar be left alone while eating to prevent rehearsal of the warning as well as to prevent escalation. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Sugar’s mouth, and any time something is removed she should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. She should be taught the cure ‘drop’ and trade up games. _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression – Sugar gives clear warning s when she is uncomfortable (head low, shoulder rubbing, shake off) and needs time to warm up to new people. It is important to make sure Sugar stays under threshold and is not pushed to escalate further. We recommend adopters prepared to go slowly with Sugar at first to allow her time to warm up to her new home and new family at her own pace.
