A volunteer writes (as told by Styx): Hi everyone — I’m back. I was so happy for my daddy because he has a new girlfriend, but the girlfriend’s dog doesn’t like me so here I am again. This can be a scary place and it takes me a little while to get comfortable with a new person. But really…not that long if you go slow with me, let me come to you when I’m ready. I love to cuddle, and I’m so happy to put my head on your lap to be petted, and then I’ll bow to you to invite you to play with me. I’ll also give you kisses, but I just need to be ready to do that all on my own. I can be goofy and silly, and serious and loving — just like people, I guess. My new friend took me into the office yesterday and I was happy to explore, make another new friend, and check my email. Yes, I get mail! I’m petite, slender and have great ears even if I do say so myself. I love to play with toys and can amuse myself by tossing it around. So I’d love for you to come meet me and let me show you how truly wonderful I am. Just be prepared to be patient and go slow…I’ll be your bestie for life. Another volunteer writes: A beautiful little girl in a black and white coat, Miss Styx is ready to come out to play and a chance to go potty. Shyly friendly, she needs time to warm up, and then she’s your best friend. Toys are her first love, and the joy of watching her play and discover each new toy can’t be measured. Who needs Netflix when you have this little one making you smile and giving you kisses every day?

A volunteer writes: Petite and gorgeous in her clean and groomed black and white coat, Styx makes friends slowly and trusts even more slowly, but when she does you have a friend for life. She’s nervous meeting me for the first time so we chat as we walk to the park; we talk about the upcoming election, the weather, the food at ACC, her favorite staff people – I let her choose the topics. Along the way she goes potty, and when we stop for some pictures she poses like a pro. Styx hops up on the park bench and when I join her she softly takes some treats and allows me to pet her. I’ve become one of the good guys, allowed a small entry into her heart. It’s off leash with her favorite staff person that we see the real Styx – all tail tags, cuddles, kisses, snuggling, rolling in for petting…a different dog because she knows this person, she trusts this person and she loves this person. Styx shows off her sit again, gives paw, loves belly rubs and playing with a tennis ball. I can’t imagine a better feeling than winning the love and trust of a timid little girl and watching her open up to be an incredible best friend. Who’s going to be that lucky person with a heart full of patience and love?
