05/12/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Young Stykie rolls through life like a good-natured hurricane, making friends as he goes and leaving a trail of toys and smiles in his energetic wake. He’s ridiculously handsome, impossibly silly, and with that winning grin and his silky strawberry-blond coat he definitely won my Model of the Day award–what a little hunk! Stykie pulls enthusiastically toward everyone and everything we encounter in the park, but accepts correction and a harness well. At heart, he’s just a soft and smushy pup who wants the rest of the world to be as happy as he is. Showing off his come and sit commands, he politely plops his butt down when asked, then takes a reward treat gently from my hand before returning to the all important business of snuffling through the leaves in search of one I dropped earlier…and bingo, he finds it! Stykie packs a ton of personality into his adorable little bod, and if your family has the energy, silliness and love to match his own, then he can’t wait to make your acquaintance. Meet him today at our Manhattan Care Center!
05/12/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Limited 5/5/17 Neutered, Stray Previously lived with: Adults Behavior toward strangers: Barks though warms up Behavior toward children: Tolerant Behavior toward dogs: Respectful Behavior toward cats: Unknown Resource guarding: None reported Bite history: None reported Housetrained: Yes Energy level/descriptors: Friendly, affectionate, playful, and excitable with a high activity level Other notes: Fearful of bath time and will struggle to get out of the tub and reported to tug at owner’s pants to indicate he needs to relieve himself outside. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 5/11/17 Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is open. Tag: 3. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Jumps up and grabs leash, takes a minute to settle. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog quickly pulls back. Squeeze 2: 2. Dog quickly pulls back. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Summary: Stykie displayed a high level of activity and movement on his assessment. During tag, he began jumping up and biting the leash and had trouble settling. He was social throughout the assessment and allowed all handling. PLAYGROUP: 5/12: When off leash with another dog, Stykie is initially anxious. He will greet briefly then seek exit. He becomes aroused by another dog in an adjacent pen and will nip at the ankles of the greeter dog. The behavior department recommends that futurue introductions to dogs are supervised, and conducted at a slow pace to respectful dogs. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 5/5/17 During his initial medical exam, Stykie allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Stykie so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. In the care center he has been active and enthusiastic. He may have a low threshold for arousal and needs guidance to learn how to appropriately channel that energy when he becomes overstimulated. He will need daily mental and physical stimulation and exercise, and a force-free, positive reinforcement-based training class may help him to learn impulse control and to train desirable behaviors that can be rewarded.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No young children (under 5): Due to the low threshold seen for arousal on his assessment, we recommend a home without young children. Older children who are comfortable around large, jumping dogs should have an in depth interaction prior to adoption. Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control: It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. _X_Social hyper-arousal: Stykie has displayed low threshold for arousal, jumping up and leash biting when excited. We advise using positive reinforcement, force free training to teach Stykie to remain calm in the presence of exciting things by rewarding calm behavior with treats and walking away from any jumping. _X_Leash-biting
