07/18/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
CANINE BEHAVIOR EVALUATION for STORM A1118143 KNOWN HISTORY: None Date of Intake: 7/11/17 Unaltered female, owner surrender, no information provided SAFER ASSESSMENT: Summary: At 5 months, Storm is underage for a formal handling assessment. However, when interacted with Storm is fairly mouthy and shows a low threshold for arousal. She needs immediate intervention and guidance to learn more appropriate ways to interact with her human caretakers and to set her up for success. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Play Skill Novice: These dogs lack appropriate skills to engage in proper play. They may become stuck on one behavior; lack pauses or breaks in play, and often ignores warning signs from other dogs to slow down. Play should end when the other dog in the pair signals it is over. PLAYGROUP: Storm plays exuberantly with male and female dogs in the care center. At times, Storm may lack impulse control when engaging, often mouthing the legs, neck and face of other dogs who are not comfortable with this play behavior. The behavior department recommends slow introductions between Storm and well-socialized dogs. We recommend only placing her into a home with another dog that is comfortable with exuberant play, but will also offer correction and help teach appropriate social skills. INTAKE BEHAVIOR: 7/11/17 At intake, Storm allowed all handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Date of Initial: 7/11/17 During Storm’s intake examinations, she was tolerant of all handling. ENERGY LEVEL: In the care center Storm has been active and enthusiastic. She appears to have a low threshold for arousal and needs guidance to learn how to appropriately channel that energy when she becomes overstimulated. Storm is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys rather than simple dishes.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced adopter (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with the behaviors outlined below) _X_No young children (under 5): Due to Storm’s mouthiness and low threshold for arousal, we feel she will best succeed in a home without very young children. Older, dog savvy children can be considered pending interaction. Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control: Storm has likely not received the guidance and structure she needs to make the right choices when interacting with humans or other dogs. We recommend only positive reinforcement, force-free, reward-based training methods for Storm as more aversive methods are likely to increase fear and to fracture the human-pet bond. _X_Mouthiness/Poor bite inhibition: Storm has shown considerable mouthiness in the care center and is quick to put her teeth on skin. This is typical puppy behavior but does need to be addressed before it becomes a go-to behavior for the rest of Storm’s life. This is a behavior that should be extinguished through training alternate behaviors and lack of reward (ex. walking away whenever Storm’s teeth make contact with skin). We recommend never playing with bare hands – always with a toy – and ending play or attention whenever Storm puts teeth on skin. She should be rewarded with attention and treats when she stops and/or when she is seeking attention in alternate ways. _X_On leash reactivity: At the care center Storm has been observed to react to other dogs on leash, lunging towards them, barking, and vocalizing. While she has appeared social when engaging with dogs off leash, Storm may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach her to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior.
07/11/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Storm plays exuberantly with male and female dogs in the care center. At times, Storm may lack impulse control when engaging, often mouthing the legs, neck and face of other dogs who are not comfortable with this play behavior. We recommend only placing her into a home with another dog that is comfortable with exuberant play, but will also offer correction and help teach appropriate social skills. 7/11: When introduced off leash to dogs in the care center, Storm is initially nervous, then opens up and begins to display playful behavior. 7/12-14: Storm engages in exuberant puppy play. 7/15-20: Storm engages in mouthy, puppy play. At times she continues to solicit from dogs who may be uncomfortable with her style of play.
