02/20/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: I’ll admit it (the first step is admitting it). I’m a sucker for the grey ghosts. The silver sweethearts, the charcoal cuties, the dove darlings. So obviously the very sight of Stephen, a sliver of a pup laying quietly in his kennel, was enough to get my heart skipping beats. As with all great love stories it wasn’t mutual to start. I was a new face to Stephen and he was shy. And though I promised him nothing but fun and the sight of the leash clearly appealed, he stayed still as a stone statue as I swung open his kennel door. But our walk was meant to be, and with all such events, destined for greatness, it was even better than ever expected. From the moment we step outside Stephen impresses me with his leash manners. He pads happily in front of me, looking back often for guidance, and sweetly tilts his head as another dog passes to our right. Once in the park Stephen sits for his treats, poses wonderfully for photos, and after a while even grants me a snuggle or two, or three. There’s now a glint in his eye, something special and sweet I can’t quite put my finger on, and as he cocks his head again at the sound of a toy his adorable ears start to wiggle. Our shy guy is gone. And in his place, a confident, playful, and inquisitive boy has emerged. We eventually call it a day and Stephen happily hops back into his kennel. And hours later, as I’m collecting my things about to make my way home, I spot him again. This time with a staff member and two new volunteers. Stephen has been chosen to help show them the ropes. “I just love this guy.” The staff member exclaims as Stephen trots proudly in front ears bouncing. “So do I,” I reply smiling and give Stephen a quick wink. And I whisper “way to go, buddy,” as he passes me by. Stephen is waiting in adoptions at Manhattan’s ACC.
02/20/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 2/16/17 Unaltered Male, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 2/20/17 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is open. Tag: 3. Dog is distracted, turns towards assessor and hard barks. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog quickly turns head towards assessor, does not pull back paw. Squeeze 2: 2. Dog quickly turns head towards assessor, does not pull back paw. Toy: 2. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. His body is between you and the toy, he is not stiff. Summary: Stephen was distracted throughout most of the assessment and appeared detached. He became over stimulated during tag, hard barking at the assessor. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Selective: These dogs can succeed with certain other dogs, but may be more selective or picky. They may dislike certain ‘types’ of dogs or styles of dog play so they may require extra supervision when interacting with other dogs. PLAYGROUP: The behavior department recommends slow introductions between Stephen and female resident dogs. He has not been introduced to male dogs in the care center, so his behavior around them is unknown. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 2/16/17 During his initial medical exam, Stephen was tense and allowed minimal handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Stephen so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced, adult only home _X_No children (under 13): Due to Stephen’s high level of arousal during tag, turing and hard barking at the assessor, we recommend he be placed in a calm, experienced, adult only home. Potential challenges: _X_Social hyper-arousal: Stephen became over aroused during tag, hard barking. Due to the behavior observed, he may do best in a calm, quiet home where people will interact with him in a gentle calm manner. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to reinforce calm behavior around activity.
02/18/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
The behavior department recommends slow introductions between Stephen and polite female resident dogs. He has not yet been introduced to male dogs while in the care center, so his behavior around them is unknown. Future introductions to male dogs should also be conducted at a slow pace. When off leash with another dog, Stephen will engage in gentle play with the intent to mount. 2/19: Stephen approaches and greets, otherwise keeps to himself.
