07/30/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
07/30/17 14:35 Basic: Stella is a 3 yr old spayed large dog. She is from ACC her owners are moving out of state and cannot take her with them. She has not had any health problems and was not see by a vet since being adopted. Socialization: Around strangers Stella is friendly and playful. She has spent time around children at home, ages 3yrs and up. With them she is relaxed and playful. She play exuberantly and somewhat rough at times with children and adults. She has not been around other dogs in the home, because outside she will bark and pull towards other dogs and it has made her owners nervous. She, once, interacted with another dog and they played well, but rough. She will try to get out of her harness when she sees another dog and wants to run towards them. She has not lived with cats or other pets. She did bite a person a few days ago but it did not draw blood. She has never bitten another animal. Behavior: Stella poops and pees inside. She will chew on household items and will whine and bark when left alone and is hard to control when she sees another dog. She isnt bothered by loud noises. She isnt bothered when someone: takes away her food, treat or toy, pushes her off furniture, holds or restrains her, disturbs her while sleeping, touches her feet. She is afraid of baths and nail trims and when someone comes near her house she will bark. When someone unfamiliar approaches her owner she isnt bothered. For new family: Stella is friendly, playful, affectionate, exciteable, and sometimes anxious. Her activity level is very high and her owners love how playful and sweet she is at home. Stella will follow her owners around at home. She sleeps anywhere and sometimes in her crate with the door open. She eats grain free dry food. She likes to play fetch and tug with chew bones and rope toys. She has been mostly indoors. She is not housetrained and has daily accidents. She is only walked once a day. She goes on the grass. She is crate trained and does well for 5 hrs. She knows “sit, come” commands and when off leash wanders but comes when called. She pulls hard on the leash. She would probably love running for exercise. During intake Stella had a loose body with a slow wagging relaxed tail. Her tail was wagging the whole time. She would frequently be sprawled out on the floor with her back legs in frog position. She was whining and panting a lot and jumped on the counselor whenever the counselor pet her. She allowed all collaring and handling.

KNOWN HISTORY: None 1/29/17, first stay at care center Spayed, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 8/1/17 Look: 1. Dog jumps up to lick the Assessor’s face with tail wagging, ears back and eyes averted. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. Her body is soft, panting, jumps up between attempts to lick Assessor. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Toy: 1. Minimal interest, dog sniffs toy. Summary: Stella displayed a high level of activity and movement on her assessment. She was social throughout and allowed al handling. PLAYGROUP: Stella is polite when greeting dogs off leash in the care center, and engages in chase play with other playful dogs. The behavior department recommends slow introductions between Stella and resident dogs who engage in a similar style of play. In home behavior/history around dogs is unknown. The previous owner reports that Stella may be reactive to dogs (lunges, barks), and has not been allowed to approach in the past. All introductions to dogs should be proceeded with using positive reinforcement methods only. INTAKE BEHAVIOR Upon intake, Stella had a loose body and wagging tail. She saw dogs in the lobby and barked at them. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 7/30/17 During her initial medical exam, Stella was social and allowed handling.
ENERGY LEVEL: Her previous owners describe Stella as a very high-energy dog. She is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control: It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach her to control her impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. _X_On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: At the care center, Stella has been observed to react to other dogs on leash, lunging towards them and barking. This behavior was also reported in her previous home. As Stella plays well with other dogs, this reaction is likely due to excitement and frustration, we recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior. She will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach her to look at you rather than other dogs.
