09/05/17 14:49 During intake: Stella was receptive to all handling and allowed the admissions counselor to collar her. She lay on the floor with her belly facing up and allowed belly rubs. She jumped on the admissions counselor gently. She had a relaxed body posture with her tongue hanging outside of the side of her mouth.
09/09/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Of course, when I meet a Stella, all that went through my head was Marlon Brando yelling ‘STELLAAAA!’, in A Streetcar Named Desire. I’m doing it now as I write! Our gorgeous girl is a super tomboy! She’s energetic, playful, knows no boundaries, is joyful, fun and exuberantly affectionate. Even when rolling over for a belly rub, all four legs flailing in the air, she never stops moving with the pleasure of it all. Stella seems to be housetrained, loves to chase a ball but doesn’t retrieve, loves to play tug and does it surprisingly softly, knows sit and then tilts her head as if asking, ‘hey, how’s this?’ Stella takes treats very gently, and then super gently spits it out when not to her liking. Stella has a big–make that a huge–personality, needs lots of exercise and playtime, and might make a great jogging partner with the right training. A class with Miss Manners (remember her?) will help her become the rockstar dog she’s meant to be. There’s not a mean bone in this gorgeous body, just a playful, exuberant fun-loving girl who is looking for her equal in a human. Couch potatoes need not apply for our Stella, but if you’re into exercise, fun and the love of a fabulously effervescent dog, Stella is waiting to meet you.
09/07/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 9/5/17 Unaltered Female, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 9/7/17 Look: 3. Dog jumps on the Assessor consistently and will not allow Assessor to conduct the assessment. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. Her body is soft, panting, jumps up between attempts to lick Assessor. Tag: 3. Dog jumps up and grabs leash in mouth, does not relinquish. Squeeze 1/2: 2. Dog quickly pulls back her paw. Toy: 1. Minimal interest, dog sniffs toy. Summary: Stella displayed a high level of activity and movement on her assessment, jumping up and being in constant motion. She was attempting to grab the leash in her mouth throughout and was reluctant to relinquish it when she got ahold of it. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: 9/6: When introduced off leash to the male greeter dog, Stella solicits pushy play, often engaging in running and jumping behavior during play. INTAKE BEHAVIOR: Upon intake, Stella was receptive to handling and had a relaxed body. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 9/7/17 During her initial medical exam, Stella was active and allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Stella so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. In the care center she has been active and enthusiastic. She may have a low threshold for arousal and needs guidance to learn how to appropriately channel that energy when she becomes overstimulated. She will need daily mental and physical stimulation and exercise, and a force-free, positive reinforcement-based training class may help her to learn impulse control and to train desirable behaviors that can be rewarded.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced adopter, adult-only home (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No children (under 13): Due to the high level off jumping and mouthing seen at the care center, we recommend an adult only home. Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control: Stella jumps up a lot on people. It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach her to control her impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. _X_Mouthiness/Poor bite inhibition: Stella has shown some mouthiness in the care center. Little pressure is applied, but this is a behavior that should be extinguished through training alternate behaviors and lack of reward (ex. walking away whenever Stella’s teeth make contact with skin). _X_Leash-biting: Stella displays a high level of leash-biting at the care center. We recommend walking her with a toy in her mouth and not engaging with her when she is grabbing the leash. If this behavior is problematic in a future home environment, a positive reinforcement, force free trainer should be consulted with.
