03/18/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Got lap? Well, OK! Let’s sit!! Got ball? Let’s play!!! Stella, whose name means ‘star’, lives up to her name in every way. Sit down and she’ll be in your lap without hesitation. Show her a ball and she’ll bat it around, amusing herself like a ‘star’ soccer player. We have yet to discover all the talents in this gorgeous girl, but it’s clear she loves people, loves to snuggle and chill out in a convenient lap, and wags her tail at every person she sees. Her coat is clean and well groomed, it’s obvious she was well taken care of before joining us. Stella is alert, curious and engaged in her surroundings as she tilts her head to focus on my squeaky toy. In group with other dogs, she greets briefly but seems more interested in leaving the yard than engaging with other dogs. Sweet, lively, beautiful and engaging, our gorgeous ‘star’ is hoping she’ll find her new home today. Got lap? She’s ready!!
03/17/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 3/15/17 Unaltered Female, Stray Other notes: Upon intake, Stella whined loudly if anyone walked away after interacting SAFER ASSESSMENT: 3/17/2017 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her ears are back, her tail is down, and she has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, mouth closed Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game, runs, jumps, whines-settles easily at end of game. Squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed Toy 2. Dog takes toy away initially, will drop toy at handler’s feet, body soft. Summary: Stella displayed no concerning behavior during her assessment. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Hyper-motivated: These dogs come on too strong and have coarse social skills. They have had a poor history of social experience with other dogs and were most likely deprived of off- leash contact. They are overly excited when meeting new dogs, often up in the other dog’s face and not able to read subtle signals to back off, which can quickly lead to a scuffle. PLAYGROUP: Stella has displayed increasing levels of anxiety during interactions with other dogs in the care center. She often has been observed to pace or sprint throughout the pens while seeking exit. Stella displayed concern during her most recent interaction by rushing into the pen and almost immediately snapping and attempting to bite at the ear and side of the other dog’s face. Due to lack of available history (arrived as a stray) as well as observations made in the care center, the behavior department advises against placing Stella into a home with dogs or any social settings where other dogs may be present. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 3/15/17 During her initial medical exam, Stella allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Stella so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. In the care center Stella has been active and enthusiastic, she will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised.
IN-SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: Stella continues to show increased anxiety and stress in the care center. She will become aroused around other dogs and cannot easily de-escalate. During one dog-to-dog interaction she became anxious and quickly escalated to correction from another dog. It is in Stella’s best interest to leave the care center in a timely manner to not further rehearse these behaviors. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (Suitable for an adopter with a previous amount of dog experience especially with the behaviors outlined below) Potential challenges: _X_Anxiety: Stella has shown some signs of potential anxiety in the care center, vocalizing and whining loudly during play sessions outside and in her kennel. We have no known history on Stella, so we cannot be certain whether similar behavior will be seen in a future home environment. Stella may benefit from daily mental and physical stimulation to keep her engaged, such as long lasting chews, food puzzles, and physical exercise. We recommend only force-free, reward-based training techniques for Stella. _X_Single-pet home: Due to Stella’s increased level of anxiety even when interacting with other dogs and her ability to quickly escalate, we recommend not placing her into a home with other dogs at this time. _X_Recommend no dog parks: Any future introductions should be conducted on a one-on-one basis.
03/15/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Stella has displayed increasing levels of anxiety during interactions with other dogs in the care center. 3/15: When introduced off leash to other dogs in the care center, Stella briefly greets and show interest, though appears to mostly be anxious while pacing and whining. 3/17: Stella is anxious in the yard. She paces and whines while seeking exit. 3/22: Stella anxiously sprints throughout the pen without engaging the other dogs. When followed by other dogs attempting to engage in play, Stella tenses, vocalizes, and attempts to avoid by running faster. 3/23: Stella rushes into the pen and frantically runs up to the other dog while jumping on his back. When the helper dog turns away and offers a low growl to signal discomfort, Stella escalates, growls, and grabs on to the ear of the dog. Handler intervention is required to remove her from the other dog.
