07/24/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: There seems to be some confusion, because I am pretty sure that Stella thinks she’s a cat. Or maybe she was one in another life! Her signature greeting is to rub against your legs, even slithering through them, as her feline cousins would. And when she jumps into your lap, she rubs her head against your torso seemingly smiling in delight. While she may not purr, and even though she is a few more pounds than your average cat (though still quite small for a dog!) if she were one, she might be considered a tortoiseshell variety–her soft coat darker in some places, lighter in others, making a sort of optical illusion that is so beautiful. But true to her canine companions, she is more outgoing than our feline friends: extremely friendly, quite obedient sitting on command, going potty outside and maintaining her manners on the leash. Animal lovers no longer have to choose which is the superior pet-because Stella is the best of both worlds. Ask to meet her today!
07/14/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Stella came to us here in the shelter on 7/11/16, so her past behaviors are unknown. At intake it was noted Stella was a bit nervous with her tail tucked, but allowed all handling. During SAFER Stella was relaxed and calm Stella had a loose body posture when interacting with the assessor, she allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Stella was relaxed during the tag interaction, and during the resource portion of the assessment. Stella was easy to handle when engaged with the item. Stella appears to be sociable, and did not display any behavior concerns, so the department feels she can be suitable for an “Average” adopter. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, tail tucked, ears back. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body low, tail tucked, bit fearful. Squeeze 1:1 Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed. Toy: 1. No interest. Dog-Dog:When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Stella greets the other dog displaying soft body language. She is tolerant of a male attempting to mount her and continually greeting her. She seeks handler attention as she wanders in the pen.
07/13/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Stella was surrendered as a stray so her history with other dogs is unknown. When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Stella displays soft and nervous body language as she greets other dogs. She is tolerant of a male attempting to mount her and continually greeting her. She spends most of her time in playgroup avoiding the other dog and seeking handler attention. The Behavior Department believes that Stella would be most comfortable as the only dog in the home, though a thorough dog-dog interaction can be conducted with a potential adopter’s dog to asses Stella’s comfort level. 7/13: Stella greets the other dog displaying soft body language. She is tolerant of a male attempting to mount her and continually greeting her. She seeks handler attention as she wanders in the pen. 7/19: Stella greets with a tucked tail and nervous posture when entering the pen. She seeks handlers attention when attempting to increase her distance from the other dog.
