07/06/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: From his curled up tail in the shape of a powdered sugar donut, to his impish little smiling face, I’m in love with this guy. His coat is a gorgeous cream color, his eyes match a couple of caramel color patches on his coat (one on the side of his cheek that I’ve made my kissing target), and his fun, friendly, sweet personality radiates from everything he does. He’s housetrained, good on the leash, ignores other dogs we pass, and when we stop to take some pictures, he doesn’t mind being tethered, and then we snuggle! Joining us with his two roommates (Yum Yum and Mr. Wacky–a Maltese mix) when their owner lost his home, Steelo, like his buddy Yum Yum, loves the tennis ball! He chases the ball, will jump to catch it, brings it almost all the way back and tries to figure out how to make two balls fit in his mouth at the same time. You can actually see him pondering this dilemma! We’re told that Steelo is social with strangers, has been with children of all ages and is usually tolerant, plays exuberantly, doesn’t have experience with dogs other than the two he grew up with, doesn’t guard his things, is well behaved when left home alone, and slept on his own bed. Steelo joins me on the bench for some cuddling but only at my invitation, giving me soft kisses and being so gentle. He’s soft and so easy to be with, shows off his sit for a treat in a very serious pose, but fetch and cuddling are his game! He’s a terrific dog waiting to meet you; don’t make him wait long.

07/03/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Steelo has not yet appeared to be completely comfortable during off leash interaction while in our care. He has been mostly tense and avoidant, though over time has opened up and displayed interest in interaction. At this time, he has showed brief interest in play, but offers correction when uncomfortable. Steelo arrived into our care with other dogs, however they were only described as being “tolerant” of one another with no further information. We are unsure how Steelo’s behavior around unfamiliar dogs will translate outside the shelter. The behavior department feels that at this time, Steelo may be most comfortable as the only resident dog until he is given time to become more comfortable and follow up on his behavior with them outside the shelter. 7/3 update: When off leash with other dogs, Steelo is tense with a high tail and hackles. He T’s the greeter dog’s shoulders. 7/5 update: Steelo is muzzled based on previous concern during intial interaction. He is tense, and barks when approached. When the muzzle is removed, he roams and does not approch the helper dog. 7/7: Steelo is tense when he enters the pen, however does offer a few sniffs from behind then the helper dog turns around. 7/8 update: Steelo is less tense when entering the pen today.
