03/03/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: A wiggly pup in a Tootsie Roll body, Stax is just as sweet as any candy. Brought in as a stray at the tender age of 10 months, Stax is loving and affectionate, but unsure of himself in his new environment. On a recent visit, he briefly explored an outdoor pen before returning to the door and crying softly as he watched another pup at play. He is looking for guidance, a friend, a playmate, a nurturer, any or all. When I go to him to comfort, he looks up with a questioning face, “where do I go from here?” I only wish I knew. Instead we begin to play ball and, for a moment, Stax’s worries wash away. He is young and carefree again, focused only on the bright yellow, fuzzy target. But the appearance of another pup pulls his attention once more and he whimpers softly to himself as he looks after them, full of questions. Stax is adorably compact at only 43 lbs and wrapped in a beautiful, shiny coat, almost as if it was slicked with oil. He has lovely face, full of life, and those sweet rabbit ears are always at attention. Easter’s not yet upon us but somehow I still know sugar sweet Stax, the little chocolate bunny, could hop his way into anyone’s heart and make them whole. Could that be you? Stax is waiting in adoptions at Manhattan’s Animal Care Center. Another volunteer writes: Little Stax is a lovely dumpling, a medium size nugget, made of pure sweet and tangy licorice and created by mother nature to spice and soften your life. In his kennel, he is ready when you are and bounces nicely in the street, tail wagging happily above his body. He is not a pigeon chaser and he seems to enjoy seeing other dogs, big and small on the way. Put him in a playgroup with his peers and you will see him enjoying their company. He is absolutely lovely to watch running and playing with his kind. Free in a pen, baby Stax enjoys a ball game. He does not guard his toy. Someone taught him to retrieve. He comes immediately when called, sits on command and takes treats very gently from my hand. Stax, being a youngster, is not all play, and wants his share of hugs and kisses. How not to oblige and welcome Stax on my lap? Puppy Stax is at the Manhattan Care Center. He will need you very soon, and so dreams to be your sweethaert, your forever best friend.
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Stax pulls a bit on the leash. He was excited but very interested in interacting with handler during assessment – jumped up, mouthy (moderate). He was overexcited during handling, mouthy, grabbing at the leash, and was hard to position, but showed no aggression. He was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. He mouthed without applying pressure during handling the paw handling. Stax took the toy with a soft body language. Stax is an active, playful and mouthy. He needs a significant amount of exercise and mental stimulation. The behavior department feels that he can go to an experienced home without young children who can follow up on this behavior. Look: 3. Dog jumps on the Assessor, consistently rubs his shoulder on the Assessor, and will not allow Assessor to conduct the assessment. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. His body is soft, likely panting, may jump up between attempts to lick Assessor. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog gently places his open mouth over the Assessor’s hand without applying pressure. Squeeze 2: 2. Dog gently places his open mouth over the Assessor’s hand without applying pressure. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Playgroup Notes: Stax enters the yard nervous, but he quickly warms up. He begins bowing and bounding toward and past the helper dog to solicit play.02/26/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
