A volunteer writes: I knew I was going to love little Starsha when she sat down in her kennel when I showed her my leash. What a good girl! We headed out to the yard and she relieved herself right away. During her photo shoot off leash in a pen Starsha kept herself entertained with a tennis ball- pawing it, rolling it, chasing it, too cute! She does not know how to play fetch yet but I bet she would be a quick study! We headed to the park and she was delightful on the leash, strolling by my side like a little lady and ignoring passing dogs and birds. When I returned her to her kennel I admired all the fabulous notes left by other volunteers about her delightful leash manners- what a good girl!! Starsha is a lovely little meatball with her short legs and bunny ears and has been beautifully cared for before joining us as a stray. She is sweet and playful, and is learning how to be a polite playmate with other dogs who she seems very friendly with, but needs some guidance on proper play manners. Strarsha is a lovely and friendly little lowrider who earned an average safer. Come meet this little bunny-eared meatball today!
02/05/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Starsha pulls a bit on the leash. She was calm and relaxed during handling. Starsha was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. She took the toy away but had soft body language. Starsha did not show any concern during the behavior assessment. The behavior department feels that she can go to an Average home. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful but unresponsive when touched. Approaches the Assessor when the game ends. Dog is likely crouching, may have long lip or lip lick. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Toy 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place her body between you and the toy. Playgroup Notes: When off leash with other dogs, Starsha greets cautiously, then goes on to explore the yard, ignoring the helper dog.
02/04/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Starsha is vocal and pushy when playing with males. She will run toward the other dogs and solicit them to run through the yard but becomes more vocal as play continues. She offers loud corrections when mounted and will pursue the correction once the other dog has ceased interacting. Starsha entered the care center as a stray, so any in-home behaviors are unknown. Based on these observations, the behavior department recommends Starsha have a pre-adoption interaction to ensure the resident dog is comfortable with her play style. When off leash with other dogs, Starsha greets cautiously, then goes on to explore the yard, ignoring the helper dog. 2/6 update: Starsha initially sniffs the other dog before walking away, but over time she becomes more interested. She vocalizes and bounces, with a stiff body, toward the other dog to solicit play. She is pushy and does not read when the other dog is uncomfortable. 2/9 update: Starsha offers a brief solicitation and will engage in some play with a polite male, becoming vocal as play continues. She offers a loud correction when mounted. 2/10 update: Starsha engages in play but can be pushy, running toward the other dogs and standing over them when play ceases. She offers correction for mounting that becomes excessive when the male walks away and she continues to vocalize and nip toward the male.
