08/16/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
08/16/17 13:21 Basic Information Starfire is a two year old, Tan colored, small female dog. Her owner surrendered her due to behavior reasons. Owner stated that Starfire was a gift from her husband and they had her for two years. She currently has no visible signs of injuries or illness. Socialization Starfire is aggressive around strangers-barks, growls and attacks. She lived at home with children ages nine and twelve and does not really play with them. She sometimes plays with her adult owner but gets very rough and obsessive. She also lived at home with another small dog and was aggressive and would growl and sometimes attack her. Starfire does not play with other dogs and has bitten a human and another animal. Behavior Starfire sometimes pees indoors; is hard to control; barks too much; destroys stuff indoors; fights with other dogs and is aggressive to people . She barks during fireworks; growls and snaps if you touch her food or bowl while eating; or take her bowl or treat away; or push off furniture; or holds or restrains her; or disturb while sleeping; or bath her. She would growl and lunge at you if try to brush or trim her nails. She growls and barks if unfamiliar faces approach owner or her family or her home. For a new Family to Know Starfire is an affectionate, confident and excitable dog with a very high energy level. She makes everyone laugh whenever she plays and likes to hide under the bed. She follows you around and would be in the same room with you. She was kept mostly indoors and slept on a blanket in a crate. She was fed dry dog food (pedigree) twice daily. She has no favorite treat; is house trained and rarely has accidents (according to owner, she does only when left alone at home). She goes potty on grass, gravel/dirt when outdoors and destroys household items if left alone at home. She understands the commands ‘sit, come, down, stay.’ She goes on slow walks on a leash; pulls lightly on the leash and stays close to your side when off leash. Behavior during Intake Starfire had a very stiff posture. She barked and growled and had her tails tucked under her belly and allowed minimal handling.

Housetrained: Yes Energy level/descriptors: Starfire is described as affectionate, confident, and excitable dog with a very high energy level. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 8/20/17 Summary: Starfire is difficult to remove from the kennel, lunging and snapping. She has allowed minimal handling from her caretakers. Out of concern for her stress levels and her response to restraint, we feel Starfire is not a great candidate for a handling assessment at this time. Please see her owner surrender profile for a full summary of her behavior in her previous home. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: Summary INTAKE BEHAVIOR Upon intake, Starfire barked, growled, and allowed minimal handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 8/16/17 During her initial medical exam, Starfire was growling and snapping. ENERGY LEVEL: Starfire’s previous owner described her as having a very high level of activity. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13): Due to Starfire’s bite history, as well as her fractious behavior towards strangers, we recommend an adult only home. _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Due to all noted concerns displayed in a home environment and at the care center, the behavior department recommends Starfire be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Starfire to acclimate comfortably to her new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Starfire to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Starfire presents with outside of the care centers. Potential challenges: _X_Resource guarding: Starfire’s previous owner notes that she may growl and snap when her food bowl is touched or when anything is taken from her. We recommend that Starfire be left along while eating, and that food guarding behavior modification steps (available at ASPCApro.org) be utilized if this behavior is problematic in her future home. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Starfire’s mouth, and any time something is removed she should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. She should be taught the “drop” cue and trade-up games. _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Starfire has bitten a person and a dog in her previous home, and has allowed minimal handling from caretakers at the care center, snapping when uncomfortable. Guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is recommended to assess behavior after decompression in a new home environment. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing or exposing Starfire to new and unfamiliar situations. _X_Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression: Starfire has a multiple-bite history and escalates quickly to snapping and biting, so this is an established behavior that she offers when she feels threatened. Starfire needs careful behavior modification and management to prevent future bites. We recommend only force-free, reward-based training methods for Starfire as more aversive techniques are likely to increase fear and increase the risk of aggression.
