A volunteer writes:

Star? More like SUPERstar! Here she is ladies and gentlemen; the gorgeous, gentle, dog-friendly, kid-friendly, playful and intelligent pet of your dreams! I could go on all day about wonderful this Bulldog beauty is but I’ll let the notes from her former family speak for themselves…Surrendered to our care when her people moved out of state, Star lived with 3 small children aged 1, 3 and 8 years old and got along fabulously with all of them. She’s a bouncy yet respectful girl in doggie playgroup and we’re told that when meeting strange dogs in the street ‘she likes to lick them’, how sweet is that?!! Star is still just a puppy but she already knows her commands for sit and shake paw, walks nicely on leash, appears to be house trained, has no issues being brushed or having a pedicure, doesn’t jump on the furniture and even loves taking a bath. For a proper little lady she can be a real clown too and off leash in the yard she shows off her fetching skills by happily dashing after a tossed toy then running back to my side while simultaneously shaking the dickens out of it. We’re told Star wasn’t bothered by loud noises in the past (with 3 kids that’s no surprise!) but she is a bit nervous of sudden noise and movement at the Care Center so a soothing, stress-free welcome to her new siblings and surroundings are essential to helping her feel at home. Star’s former owner recommended her for a family home and I couldn’t agree more. This darling girl has SO much to give to the world and she deserves to be surrounded by love and laughter for the rest of her long, happy life so come on in to our Manhattan Center and take home your very own Superstar today!

PROFILE :

Basic information
Star is a 1 year old female American Bulldog with no known medical conditions. Owner has had star for 8 months and is surrendering because they are moving out of state.
Socialization
Star has lived with children ages 1,3 and 8 and got along great with them. Star is very relaxed and affectionate with the children. Star plays gently with adults children and other dogs. Star has not lived with other dogs or cats.  When star sees another dog outside she likes to lick them.
Behavior
Star isn’t bothering when having her food bowl touched or toys and treats taken away. Star enjoys getting bathes and being brushed.  During storms and fireworks Star is calm. Star isn’t bothered when having her nails trimmed and she doesn’t go up on the furniture. When someone unfamiliar approaches the house Star will bark but greet them when they walk in.
For the new family to know
Star was described as friendly affectionate, playful and shy with a medium activity level. Star enjoys playing with squeaky toys and bones. Star knows how to play tug and knows the commands sit down and paw. Star is house trained and well behaved when left in the house alone.  When no one is home star get put in a big sectioned off playpen in the house. Star Goes on 2 to 3 walks a day for about 15 min. Star pulls lightly on the leash and has not been walked without the leash. Star goes to the bathroom on both grass and cement. Star eats Proplan purina dry food 2 to 3 times a day. Previous owner believes star will do well in a family home.
Behavior during intake.
Star was very excited during intake. Star had a wiggly body and approached counselor right away and put her head in their hands. Star was a little afraid of the scanner but allowed to be scanned and collared. Star allowed all handling.
BEHAVIOR :
Star came into our center as an owner surrender citing moving issues. It is reported she lived with children ages 1, 3, and 8, relaxed and affectionate. Behavior around cats is unknown. Owner reports Star isn’t bothered if anyone touches her Food, Toys, Treats. It is reported Star is housetrained and well behaved when left alone in the house. Previous owner believes star will do well in a family home. Star was very excited during intake, wiggly body, approached counselor right away and put her head in counselor’s hands. She was slightly fearful of the scanner but allowed all handling. Star walked well on leash for her relief walk. She was friendly and sociable upon entering SAFER assessment room, but was easily startled by sudden noises or movement (door, chair, etc). Star allowed her head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, relaxed. She stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, mouth open, body soft. Star was a bit uncomfortable during Tag game, turned body away on last pass, but approached assessor at the end with gentle coaxing. She did not pull her paw back on both Squeeze attempts. Star settled close with Toy, relinquished it easily. Owner reports Star enjoys playing with squeaky toys, bones, and tug, knows the cues ‘sit’, ‘down’, and ‘paw’. When off leash with other dogs, Star is exuberantly playful, bouncing, and running around. The Behavior Team feels Star would do best with an Experienced adopter. She may benefit initially from a quiet environment due to being easily startled by loud noise and quick movement.
Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her ears are back, her tail is down, and she has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands.
Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture, open mouth
Tag: 2. Dog is slightly uncomfortable, turns away from hand on last pass, approaches at end with gentle coaxing.
